There is no such thing as WMP 8. You can down-grade to 7 or--my personal favorite--6.4.

I will re-direct you here for help...

It was talked about on Call For Help on TechTV. Since you are using Win XP, it's perfectly relevant to your problem.

I upgraded to WMP 9 (from 6) earlier this week. This morning I needed to clear some hard drive room so I tried copying some video files I had downloaded from the net using Roxio CD Creator like I always have. Almost all of my video files are now uncopyable, is it just a coincidence or does the upgrade do something to prevent video files from being copied? I can still burn MP3's. I'm rather new at all this and need some help. Any thoughts?

Thanx,

Gator

That's what I meant, Windows Media Player XP. I used it to make my CD's (I know, I should use nero or something) but now the quality is crappy and it takes up more resources. MPxp is what I'm looking for, thanks again.

 well MicroSolth has added code in their media player that "prevents" copyrighted software (primarily video and music) from being copied. This is to prevent those copying and giving it away from doing so. NO they didn't tell you about this added "feature" because they knew you wouldn't download it or install it! And it is damn near impossible to get it out of the registry.... OUR FRIENDS!

Thanks for the reply, that's what I was afraid of. The files in question are of some sports footage from Europe and is hard to find. What should be my next step? Some of these files were on my hard drive for months, well before I upgraded, am I still screwed? If I remove WMP9 now will it help me with my future downloads? My MP3's seem to be fine, is it because I never use WMP to play them? Some of the files I can download again but some are almost irreplacable, any chance of unlocking them?

Thanx,

about the only thing you can try is to run "system restore" to the day before you did the upgrade to mp9, this will restore the older version of media player and hopefully rectify your problem....mike

I still use WMP6.4 and it works fine on sites like www.mp3.com for streaming music, its light and loads fast..

Some online sites bug you with a popup to try to get you to 'upgrade' to the nasty WMP9 but thats their problem. Don't do it!

WMP7 has the eye candy but doesn't load as quick as v6.4.

WMP8 is like 7 but more bloated.

WMP9 has the evil Digital Rights Management (DRM) spyware/software and once you install it you cannot remove it without a reformat.

The lesson is to do a backup before you install *anything* new from MS.

This topic intrigued me, I found this solution on the Tech Guy Forum, for what it's worth here is AZSR's solution:

Media player 9, dont do it, you dont need or want this software. This program integrates itself with windows XP, it becomes a system componet and officialy can not be removed. According to microsoft, it will cause windows to not run correctly with out it once installed.. Media player 7.1 will do everything you need,Ok, this thing is the biggest spyware on the planet, you better have a legal version of windows to run this, it is constantly trying to access the internet, luckily zone alarm lets me know and I just say no. It will report to microsoft anything and everything on your system, here is the fix,, :

MANUAL UNISTALL OF MEDIA PLAYER 9
1-- uninstall MP9 or MP7 (if is Present) from Add/Remove Programs and reboot
2--Search and delete the following files:
C:\windows\wmplibrary_v_0_12
C:\windows\system\wmplenc.dll
C:\windows\system\wmpui.dll
C:\windows\system\wmp.ocx
C:\windows\system\wmploc.dll

C:\windows\system\wmpscheme.xml
C:\win\inf\wmp.inf
C:\windows\help\wmplayer.chm
C:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe
3--search for and rename Mpauth.dat ( if is Present) on this Case the file was
Missing.
4--delete the following registry keys:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uni nstall\WMP9 (on this Case this
entry was missing).
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed

5- enable file extensions
See SOX000608700092 How to show file extensions for WIN9X
6--go to the following web site <http://www.geocities.com/eenfo/mp9.htm> or just
copy and paste in to a word document the following:

I just found this website and I love it :D but more about that elsewhere on the forum. Want my personal advice. Go back to version 6.4 and add codec packs and updates. It's not the most stable version but it is the last version before Microsoft started its policy of "We dicide what you have to do and like". Mediaplayer 6.4 uses a normal window caption without all the space consuming bla bla etc. I think mediaplayer is a great example of newer is not better. Wanna know what I think of the Microsoft policy:

Bob,
I made note of your instructions for future reference, but have a question about the final list of files to be removed. I'm not sure if you are indicating, for instance the last one, "ren c:\windows\inf\wmp.inf *.fni" or did you mean to use the dos command "rem" with the file name? (I better ask this question now when I'm calm, rather than later when I may be frustratedly trying to remove the files.)

Thanks for all the info.

I think Media Player 8 comes bundled with XP, so I don't know if works with other versions of Windows.

I've heard of some people installing Media Player 9, only to want to go back to version 8.

You can try the download from the following location:

http://66.111.69.58/downloads/mp8_eng.zip

I don't use it, so I'm not sure how well it works.

Hope this helps.

Dont know about xp but usually in all versions of windows u can type <mplayer2> in the start/run box to get an earlier version loaded.
Or create a shortcut to the file <mplayer2.exe> leave out the < >
U can use the start/find files box to locate it.
Search the forum for previous postings
Go 2 Search link (Help Search Members Calendar) at top of O.V page & type in something like <windows and media and player> No < >
Read any posts if no help try sum other search terms
Get sum sleep ;)

you can not "degade" by installling software ontop of software. especially any microsoft product. That ofcourse is not permitted. after all, who wants to remove the newest and greatest. ;)

Have a look in your ADD/REMOVE panel. See if you can remove WMP from there. If yes, then remove, then install the version you want. If it is not in there, then in the Add/Remove, switch to the Windows Setup panel. and look through the listing, and see if you can unselect WMP from there.

why are you want to remove WMP? If you dont like the size of the window that can be changed from the skins options, to make it look like the older version.

AS Goslow pointed out. on some versions of Windows, if you installed a newer version of WMP, there will be the original version of WMP lingering about. But i suspect this might not be true with XP. Since XP most likely comes with WMP 7 or higher as default.
But you can try checking and post back if you find it.

I like WMP overall, but i upgraded to windows media 9 a while back, and its horrible... too many adds and the frame rate on it for some reason is extremley bad. I tried using FFDshow to alter it so it would perform better, but it just didint work. wmp 7 its a ME wmp, and 8 is a XP, yea it did come with mp2 BUT, i tried to change the priority of them, making v2 the main wmp, but it just got really mixed up. i can tolerate 8 i geuss :( just as long as v9 doesent haunt me again.. curse that version to hell  thx guys

and Microsoft also testified in a court of law that their Internet Explorer could not be removed from the OS.
yes there are tools out there such as 98lite and IEradicator which do remove IE from a system.
Today, maybe you can not uninstall WMP9, but its possible eventually someone will write an app that can remove WMP.
But your correct, the best thing is to backup before installing and upgrading Microsoft programs.

You can uninstall WMP 8 and 9 from XP.

In response to all of these threads:

The stock Windows Media Player in XP (WMP8) cannot be uninstalled. It is integrated
to the system, which I assume the first person posting was trying to do. But there
is a way around this.

First of all, if you would prefer to just use the classic windows media player 6.4,
it is already installed in Windows XP along with WMP8. You can simply open the WMP8
options and uncheck all the associations with media files. Then after closing it,
you can open 6.4 and recheck which file associations you would like to use in it.
All icons double-clicked will open in 6.4 and you have to worry about 8 again unless
you manually open WMP8, in which case it will automatically reassociate the extentions
again. Otherwise, all you have to deal with are quite a few other WMP XP integrations
that you cannot get rid of.

If you would like to get rid of it completely, in association to the other threads
about WMP9, you can download and install WMP9 for Windows XP, then after restarting,
you can use the command previously posted:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %SystemRoot%\inf\wmp.inf,Uninstall

Make sure you associate the extensions first to let windows determine the default
media player as 6.4. Then when the uninstall takes place, it will rollback to 6.4
instead of 8, and both 8 and 9 will dissappear. WMP 6.4 becomes the default XP media
player.

Thanks to all others who posted, especially the uninstall string from Microsoft Support,
for helping everyone out with this.

Taken from here (http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1010069240). ;)

I hadn't found this forum when I was trying to get rid of WMP9, but I did find a program from litepc.com that removed it. The only problem I've still got is trying to find the wmv1 codec so I can change wmv's to avi's. I'm definitely going to copy out the code above. Can't seem to play wmv1, wmv2, or wmv3, despite getting the 6.4 codecs from M$. Maybe there's code sitting quietly in the background?

It doesnt have that stupid COPY PROTECTION in it,etc........

I havent heard of a 9 beta, there is a Version 10 Beta, thats probably what you mean my friend.....Its not very good from what i hear.

But WMP 9 is the last update for 98se and its fine with me..

I tried installing WMP10 and it said i needed XP (hehehe,if i could disguise my OS to look like XP to programs, maybe i could DL it then, but it sounds like i wouldnt wanna anyways,so......)

WMP10 causes IE to crash when streaming media is presend on a page. Im trying to switch to WMP9 to see if that fixes the problem, but after I removed WMP10 manually and cleanup the regisrty keys with a registry cleaner I have, the WMP9 installer still tells me I have WMP10 installed and quits!

If anyone knows a solution to the streaming media crash in IE6/WMP10/SP2 would be of great help also.

Why do you need to downgrade WMP to WMP9, for downloading mp3 software?
Windows Media Player's preferred encoding is wma. You can install any mp3 software you like. Having WMP installed will not affect any music software you download. WMP does not know what software you download.

Your not downloading the Samsung software, your installing it. - there is a difference.
For this case, go to the Samsung website and see if they have an update, contact the developers of whatever it is your trying to install. The problem is Samsungs product. Depending on its age, WMP10 might be too new for it.

The file wmplayer.exe has a version number of 10.0.0.3802 where 10.0.0.3646 was expected.
Windows Media Player is not installed properly and must be reinstalled.
Do you want to install the player from the Microsoft Web Site?
Yes No

what should i do?
it would not uninstall or roll back
i tried installing v9 but it says the version u have is newer, and this installtion will not continue

 Can anyone explain how I can INSTALL Windows Media Payer version 9 over Windows MP version 10. When I try to do this I keep getting a message saying that I have a more recent version of MP running and then it just exits. Version 10 has never worked properly on my system since I downloaded it.

Thanks a million for the replies.

I downloaded WMP 10 and now cannot remove it to go back to 9. I cannot play an videos from the web - I connect as far as choosing a "trailer" but nothing happens after that.
How do I delete WMP 10? It is NOT on my Add/Remove programs. I use Windows XP
ANy help would be appreciated!

1) Just delete the folder for WMP10 COMPLETELY!!!!!!
2) Run REG SEEKER (http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm) and let it clean your registry....(BEST REG CLEANER TO DATE -- 1ST TIME I RAN IT,IT REMOVED OVER 800 KEYS!)

3) Re-install WMP9

I know,WMP10 is garbage........

Good Luck!!

Hi!
Followed your instructions but I cannot delete the folder because it always says something is in use although I close all data....

Anyway, ran the registry cleaner as you suggested and re-installed 9 BUT it still says there is a newer copy and will not install!

Now what???? !!!

Hnnnnnm, can you make sure ALL PROCESS'S for that WMP10 are closed????? (Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and look for any threads running that have to do with WMP10 and 'END TASK' on them all)

Ot you could try botting up in SAFE MODE (If XP has a safe mode,i dunno.....)

Theres ways to rid yourself of that garbage MS calls WMP10!!!

Good Luck :)

go to www.ashampoo.com and use the trial version of winoptimer suite, the trial does not let you delete all the unnecessary files on your hard drive but you can look through them and then write down and manually remove the ones relating to windows media player 10 you will be surprised how much this app will find regarding left behind files from old apps and such like. give it a go

I need an earlier version of Windows Media Player for use on my computer, which uses Windows 95. I am currently using version 6.4, but I need a newer version. I know that version 7.1 is not compatible with Windows 95, but is 7.0 compatible?

Hi, I just downloaded the Windows Media player 6.4.
I'm using Windows 95 and the Windows Media player 6. 4 was meant for Windows 95.
When I went to play a windows media file.
It says, unable to download an appropriate decompressor in Windows 6.4
What does that mean?
The files wont play.

saying your processor is not strong doesnt give much of an indication of why you are having problems,it may just be the amount of apps you have running in the back ground, please add your system properties to give us a better idea of what you are running,ie processor size and memory installed

Program Name: Windows Media Player
Website:www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia
Current version: 11
Desired versions: 8
Description: Audio/Video Player

I need version 8, the link on this thread to download it is dead. WMP 8 comes bundled with Windows XP SP1; is there a way to extract it from the XP SP1 CD?

I found it, here are the links:

http://file.mydrivers.com/tools/sound/mp8_eng.zip

http://file2.mydrivers.com/tools/sound/mp8_eng.zip

However, it's only supposed to work on Windows 2000, i have XP SP2 here, and am wondering if it'll work...

Xcellent :)

It should work for you, just run it in 'COMPATIBILITY MODE' on your XP :)

Wmp8&9 are the BEST of the series!!
