Great site.

Your version of the Windows Media Player 6.4 does not run on Windows 2000.
The version that runs on Windows is 6.4.09.1121.
Could you please upload this version?

I believe with Windows 2000 you can type start->run and type in "mplayer2" without the quotes to launch Windows 6.4.

Yes that is correct.

Another tip is replacing the file for the current version of Media Player with "mplayer2" kinda swap filenames..

Hey, it's me, Brian, lightsup55!

Anyway, sorry, that was a shout-out to my brother.

So, who likes that program. I like the older version of WMP because:

>> I HATE all skins
>> I TOTALLY HATE jukeboxes and playlists
>> I also have problems with 7 because it's slow
>> I think that visualizations are unnecessary

Let me know what ya'all think.

I agree, WMP 6.4 is the best for video playback, it runs faster, and isn't as bloated as the newer versions are.

It's true, if you like visualizations to go with your audio files, 6.4 can't help you. However, if you don't care about that, 6.4 is the way to go for audio as well.
WinAmp works good for audio too, though.

Uh, no... WinAmp... it weakens me... *cough, die*

Heh... Well, the reasons why i don't like WinAmp are these:

>> WinAmp (below 3.0) load too slow (i hate 3.0 by the way)
>> Cannot be maximized
>> And it has a playlist
>> I hate double-sizing every thing, just to use it well...

I'm using an AMD K6-2 300 MHz (same as lightsup55) and with a screen resolution of 800x600.

I've never had trouble with WinAmp 2.x loading too slow, and I've used it on an AMD K6 200MHz (with only 32MB of memory). But, I will concede that I didn't use it very often on that machine.

You are definitely right about WinAmp 3.0... it's no good.

You don't like playlists, eh? For me sometimes they are useful, sometimes they are a pain.

I don't understand one thing though, why would you need to maximize a program that plays audio? I usually minimize it. (Even when I'm using WMP.)

Light10084--unregistered
12-28-2002, 12:45 PM
As far as Maximizing:
It's because my sound card is old. It only supports 1 sound channel. Besides, I'm never usually working on the comp while the music is playing. And another thing is, i've never had many problems with WMP 6.4 as much as WMP 7 or WinAmp, so why not maximize it?

About loading too slow... I like things to come up instantly. WMP 6.4 comes up in a second or less; WinAmp, however, takes up to 5 for the first load after my comp was started up, and 3 afterwards.

Eh, SOMETIMES the playlists are helpful... But they're only good when i'm trying to find out which tune i like. I mean... Have you ever seen DX-Ball, or DX-Ball 2 (which i think is better than Long Bow Digital Arts' new program called Rivial Ball)? I hear the sounds in the game, but i need to distinguish which is which. Oh, that reminds me... WinAmp is the only program that plays .mod files from what i know. :P But anywhoo... Seasons is my favorite (credit: sidewinder from the game DX-Ball 2).

Well, most of all, i don't like the playlist because it's strange to use sometimes. I just don't bother with it.

Just a few reminders:
DX-Ball (the original by Michael P. Welch) is available at www.blitwise.com (http://www.blitwise.com/downloads.html).
old website (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://home.stny.lrun.com/scorched/)
DX-Ball is a 'breakout' game based on the popular Amiga game Megaball by Ed and Al Mackey. It attempts to take the best aspects of Megaball and mixes them with a few fresh ideas. A great deal of effort went into the game's "Amiga" look-and-feel.

DX-Ball 2 (http://www.longbowdigitalarts.com/dxball2.html) and Rival Ball (http://www.longbowdigitalarts.com/rivalball.html) is available at www.longbowdigitalarts.com (http://www.longbowdigitalarts.com/).
DX-Ball 2 is based on the original DX-Ball by Michael P. Welch and Rival Ball is based on DX-Ball 2 with newer boards.

NOTE: If you have ever heard about or played other brickout/breakout games (you move a paddle across the screen to bounce a ball up that breaks bricks, when all of the bricks are gone, you advance to the next board/level), you'll like DX-Ball, DX-Ball 2, and/or Rival Ball.

NOTE FOR MACINTOSH USERS: You can download a similar game called MacBrickout which is available at leapfrogsw.com (http://www.leapfrogsw.com/). If you own a PC, you can download the Windows version called WinBrickout available at www.winbrickout.com (http://www.winbrickout.com/).

And please register! If you don't, read SSS's post and not to mention that you'll miss out on a lot of features that this board has to offer to registered users only.

It is available for Windows 2000. I went to the bottom of the page and it said:

Windows® 95
Windows 98
Windows 2000
Windows CE (for Pocket PC and Palm-size PC)
Windows NT®
Solaris
Macintosh

So on that page you can download 6.4.09.1121 of Windows Media Player.

for those users in Windows XP...

WMP 6.4 is already installed along side of WMP 8...

Instead of running WMP as you normally do, whether thru the accessories/entertainment section in your start menu/programs, or desktop shortcut, etc etc etc do a start -> run command and run mplayer2.exe (file located at c:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\mplayer2.exe)

Fully functional WMP 6.4...version 6.4.09.1125 to be exact.

Hell, even WMP 5.1 is installed in windows XP...just run mplay32.exe (file located at c:\windows\system32\mplay32.exe)

hey guys i sent you this email.

Hello,

I have just noticed that since Windows Media Player 9 has been released, Windows Media Player 7.1 English version has been taken off the Microsoft site for download. This is odd as all other language downloads are available. But anyway, some people who have 98/ME/2000 may still need 7.1 whether it's because 9.0 doesn't work or what not. (I know I had to revert back to 7.1 on my 98 drive because 9.0 ran poorly) Luckily I had a backup of the WMP install file. I have uploaded it to my personal web space and would greatly appreciate it if you added it to your WMP category. Here is the link: http://members.cox.net/jpj73/mp71.exe

Thank you,

Joe

I found a few more versions of WMP that OldVersion doesn't have:
Version 5.2 (16-BIT)
http://msdl.microsoft.com/msdownload/mplay.../en/MPSetup.exe (http://msdl.microsoft.com/msdownload/mplayer/3.0/b1/en/MPSetup.exe)

Version 6.0
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads...8/mpfullx86.exe (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/bin/w98/mpfullx86.exe)
Info on 6.0: http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloa...yer/Default.asp (http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/contents/WUMultimedia/MPlayer/Default.asp)

Although the links above are through MS, their Media Player download page doesn't list these versions, so I suspect that they won't be available for long. (It's probably an accident that they are available now!)

Also, Version 7.0: http://oldweb.pmt.org/secure/tools/MEDIAPL...PLAYER/wmp7.exe (http://oldweb.pmt.org/secure/tools/MEDIAPLAYER/wmp7.exe)

I always use wmp 6.4 as i find that 8.0 wont let me skip to certain points on some of my wmv files so i would have to watch the whole file to find the point i want

Well, i upgraded my WMP 7 to 9, but still, WMP is better as 6.4. Luckally, WMP doesn't affect any other versions of itself, older or newer. However, file types always get affected, but nothing hard to fix.

My work PC (running Win2000) is infected with the latest version of windows media player. I came here to get version 6.4, but Win 2000 does not allow me to run the installer.

Would it be possible to offer the regular exe file for the program (mplayer2.exe)? On my home PC, I have both version 6.4, as well as the version from Win 95. I would be happy to submit them.

Thanks for a great site!

Type:

mplayer2.exe

To find the file on your computer, click
Start -> Find -> Files or Folders

Name: mplayer2.exe

Click search. Be sure to create a shortcut to it and place it on the desktop.

Hello,

In some sites they refer to realmedia extentions in WMP. I know real forced MS to remove it cause of copyright crud, but where may I download it?

I can't find it in google, and MS doesn't have it available to download anymore.

The reason why is that Realplayer hard stalls my computer for some reason and I want to be able to listen to real audio streams at least...

Thanks!

WMP can only play RealAudio/Video 4.0 files and under.

before I posted this, I downloaded the plugin, to make sure it was not going to be a dead link.
so i have the plug-in, if you want i can email it to you then.

infact, I just now, while replying with this message, checked to make sure, and the file does download.

you have to click the link titled "toget"

but if it doesnt work for you, i can email you it.
just let me know.

Any idea where I can find the extension for WMP?

locustfurnace

i dont know of any extensions for WMP. i do not use WMP, RA.
i had only looked for an explanation, which is contained in the first few links in my posting.
as far as the links suggest, WMP will only play RA v4.

try this page it has some info. on the directshow acm for handling RA v4
http://www.microsoft.com/Developer/PRODINF...ew_Media_Player (http://www.microsoft.com/Developer/PRODINFO/directx/dxm/help/ds/oview/whatnew.htm#New_Media_Player)

thats about all i know. since I dont use realaudio for anything.

are the old version of RA also stalling your system?
behind a proxy maybe? and have not set RA up correctly to use the proxy?

Naelphin

I have tried Realplayer 8 and 7. Both hard crash my computer when it first tries to load up. I have no proxy, as it is my home machine.

RealOne requires more of a computer than I have, and I think it'd crash too. I've also heard lots of problems relating to it.

Not to sound like a broken record here, but I can tell you did not search the forum, since on the very top of the Programs Topic is a similar question with already contains the answer.
http://www.oldversion.com/talk/index.php?a...t=ST&f=2&t=1390 (http://www.oldversion.com/talk/index.php?act=ST&f=2&t=1390)

If that does not answer your request, then search the forum and i am sure this has been answered and asked more times in the past, and also, past message hold value, the information does not get all moldy and useless -on most apps that is!

welcome. your not being a pain, I just want to point out that by searching the forum there are answers already. For many apps the same question is asked over n over, thats no problem, but for the person asking the question, they could have had an answer much faster had they searched, then sitting around waiting for someone to answer their post.
and if the answer is not in any of those postings, just add your question to one of those postings, to up it to the top of the board. and this will be seen, plus it will keep alot of the program-in-questions problems and answers in a single thread.

I do not remember any Windows Media Player being capable of those functions. I know you can get some of these features in the "MediaPlayer Classic" at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ackage_id=84358 (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358) which can do some of these features, and can also play Quicktime Movies & Real Media via codec packs. Which do not require you to install either Quicktime or Real Player to use the codes.
You can get the codecs pack at http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/
Note, the mega-codec pack is 17megs.
