Yahoo gives you a few megabytes (4 Megs) for email storage, as does many free services. This new FREE service will give 1,000 Megabytes (1GB) mailbox.
The service is not yet open to the general public, but when it does, and if it is successful, the size of the mailboxes alone will make this free web-based e-mail service hard to beat. Powered by Google.

1 GB! That is alot of mail. I don't get that much email in one year. ;)

True, but it would make it much easier to e-mail old versions of apps between members! Since trying to e-mail a simple 1 meg file can be a problem with Yahoo, or Hotmail, when the box is half filled with spam to begin with.

It's for Mac enthusiast's. Alot of people own both. E-mail is the same regardless of which platform your using. It's a protocol (SMTP,POP,IMAP), not platform specific.

Craps?
I own 4 Apple Mac's and 1 PPC. There is alot one can do the older macs I have that a similar equipped PC would fail at.
Macs are and have always been alot more powerful than their counterparts in the PC world. Since they had made strict use of SCSI CD/HD drives, not the slower IDE drives the PC generally used. I also still have an old Apple external SCSI cd-drive with caddy system.
Being under the control of a single company for hardware & software also helps eliminate the problems PC's face with hardware incompatibilies.
The old PPC I have has built-in ethernet, way before ethernet was common add-ons for PC's.
Replacing motherboards on the PPC is also a breeze, just slide out the old MB, insert new one, and all set. No need to unscrew or unmount anything or even open the case!
Even the Apple Company treats its users alittle better than those who use Windows, I can download older Apples' Operating Systems from Apples' own ftp server. Try finding a old version of Windows on Microsofts website that you can download for free, can't find Windows 3.1.
I've an Apple IIc from 1989 that still works well, has original OS on it, can do wordprocessing with little trouble.
My old apples have super floppys (standard equipment), which eject by dragging the floppy icon to the trash can, PC's you still have to manually press a button to eject.
Check out the newest G5's from Apple. Dual 64bit CPU's!
http://www.apple.com/powermac/

Another MIPS system you should check out, SGI's Tezro, features 4 64bit CPU's.
http://www.sgi.com/workstations/tezro/

Your should buy an old Apple, you'll then add more software options and am sure you would enjoy one.

I was reading in a UK national newspaper's IT section how Google are going to keep the service free. They will display ads related to the contents of the e-mails you are reading or a "string" when you search through them all.

Raises a lot of privacy issues. But can you imagine it? Someone on another forum mentioned just slip in a line like "where can I buy some shoes for over £300" in e-mails sent to a g-mail account and see how many adds you get! :D

Thats ok, not offended at all. If you never owned one, you can't judge it too well just on what someone else says.
When PC's where finally being shipped with CD-R Recorders, Apple's where already shipping with DVD Recorders. You should go doen to the local BestBuy or CompUSA and mess around on the Apple's they have.

I have no intentions of using google for conversational e-mail. I find it should be a good sized offsite storage container, and a way to shuffle files back and forth between people. I do not mind if they archive the contents of the old version of yahoo or icq or 7zip.
If you have privacy concerns over googles knowledge of the contents of your e-mail, use email encryption. PGP and Blowfish and the rest where designed when you must pass sensitive material between unsecure channels.
Do you think your email with your ISP, yahoo, hotmail is not able to be viewed by others? If your not on a SSL encrypted channel or using encryption now, anyone who wants can intercept your e-mail as it zips around the net.
Google is just being honest that they will archive your email. Most ISP's "backup" your email also.

Just use a file splitter. split the pieces up and send it, atleast you can still send enough of the pieces to a single mailbox.

Do you think..no (not sure what implies that) but, I do believe that by signing up it gives tacit approval to googles direction, it amuses (http://starbulletin.com/2004/04/11/business/brandao.html) me.
not trying to suggest they are worse/better (http://www.google-watch.org/ipogoo.html#point9) thats unlikely (unless bigger is better)
a good privacy policy would state for how long those files you thought you deleted are "backed up"

the more a search engine knows about your history, your consumer patterns, your past searches, and your interests as an individual, the better position it is in to provide search results. It can base these results not merely on the terms you entered in the search box, but also deduce what you really meant by those terms. (http://www.amazon-watch.org/)
& I can't wait to be finally understood ;)

b.t.w. I've never had a yahoo address that half fills up with spam, had very few spam through yahoo in fact, cant even say I know anyone that gets terribly bothered by spam through yahoo do you?.(perhaps different levels of filtering in different regions)
had one hotmail address that was a bit of a curiousity it never received spam, it had no special caracters, no numbers in the address that are supposed to provide the mythical spam protection.(every other "hotmail" recieved spam within minutes/hours/daysmax of being generated)

was pleasantly suprised by how little spam seemed to come from onselling of an address, after signing up for "lotsofstuff" each with a unique address for about a year, one problem "company" was CNET, didnt onsell it (to spammers) just sent me lotsospam themselves.

p.s. dont forget to regularly complete the compulsory signing in (surely they'll follow the rest & have it, they prolly want to keep an eye on (http://www.gmail-is-too-creepy.com/) that "super" cookie).I wouldn't like to think (http://www.google-watch.org/gifs/gooheads.gif) of a gigs worth of uploaded split files being deleted.
I'm still in mourning after losing a folder.

I thought this would be a great idea to store tubes, graphices etc. myself, even tho the openly admit that they plan on data mining your account. I'd not ever place anything there that I gave a rat's tail about. However, til Google gets their show on the road I signed up for Spymac. It is turly fubar'd.
No where on their site or in the TOS does it state what it won't allow other than porn. However, they have blocked all mail from Yahoo groups. It's free so, their viewpoint seems to be take it or leave it.. They're trying to blame it on a minor glitch and also state that Yahoo won't forward to them. Think twi ce before trying Spymac.

Hotmail counters Google e-mail

Hotmail is boosting the amount of storage space for users of both its free and paid e-mail service.
From July the basic Hotmail allowance will be boosted to 250MB and paying customers will get two gigabytes.

The move is widely seen as a response to Google's GMail service which gives all users a gigabyte of storage to keep all their messages.

With the announcement, Hotmail becomes one of a growing pool of e-mail firms offering users huge amounts of storage.

......

Ask Jeeves has also increased the amount of storage for users of its free e-mail services. Now users of MyWay, Excite and IWon will get 125MB of hard disk space

Yahoo has already increased users mailboxes to 100megs for non paying users and 2GB for paying users. Plus attachment filesize has gone from 3megs to 10megs.

Another supplier of free 1GB storage e-mail, seems alright so far.
Here's the link Rediff.com (http://mail.rediff.com/registernewmail.htm) if anyone else wants to give it a try.

Another is Aventure (http://www.aventuremail.co.uk/register/2/) email with 2gb free service from an Irish company

Somewhere for you to store backup photo's etc!

BTW the aventure one is not accepting new people at the moment
and the rediff one on the free service does not forward to pop3 (ie OE)

but how does google know the contents of your emails Hhhmmmmm !

Computers scan it, then if they find any keywords, they'll send e-mail to you related tpo the keywords.

Besides, it's better than Hotmail spam, which spams you telling you to help stop spam.

This is really great news (http://home.no/mp3zone9/gmailfs.zip) (Download starts immediatly)

GMail Drive is a Freeware Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google GMail account, allowing you to use GMail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google GMail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your GMail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag'n'drop files to.
