WMP will play standard AVI's. What your not saying is if the AVI's your wanting to play are encoded in the DivX format. Then the answer is, WMP will play DivX encoded AVI's once you install a Divx codec.

what are they working now?

ps ffdshow is a great codec pack. lets you play any divx file in media player. even the new divx5 vids. also try k-lite codec pack. stay away from nemo, he has whored himself out to spyware distributors, and his packs suck anyway. lots of compatibilty issues.

media player has always been able to play avi's. it sort of started out that way. this is just a guess but maybe the avi's you are trying to play are encoded with divx. in which case you would have to download the divx codec here: http://download.divx.com/divx/DivX511.exe you should be able to play them after installing this
