How do Guy's?!

I have this secondhand Compaq presario 2240 that has a US HDD. THats Utterly Stuffed not United States.

It seems that I need the original setup files to be able to resurrect this machine that otherwise is a runner.

If anyone can help me here I would appreciate it.

Since the recovery CD contains an OS; MS Windows. No one can legally share it with you, without breaking the EULA. It would be be illegal to offer it for download, plus it would be in the hundreds of megabytes.
You should contact the support dept for Compaq, and see if you can purchase a CD. Else you might be able to find one on ebay.com

It depends whay you mean by "set-up" files. If you mean the Operating System (like Windows), see locustfurnace's reply above.

If you mean the ROM Bios, diagnostics and drivers, Compaq/HP has them available for dowload.

If you're going to use Windows 98 see:

Or for Windows 95:

Thanks Pete, you're on to it!

I had looked before and just not found any thing like the site you pointed me to.

I hope that they are what I am wanting.

Apparently, I don't actually know as I wouldn't buy a compaq, but I am told that theya re set up to have part of the BIOS on the HDD. When I started this machine it asked for the setup files and I assume that these are on FDD.

THanks for your useful reply Pete.

I had a hard disk failure on a much older Compaq once. I used similar files, from the Compaq website, to set up the replacement drive.

Depending on your CD drive, you may also need to find some DOS drivers for the CD drive before you can install Windows. If your CD drive supports generic drivers you may be OK, but I had to look on the manufacturer's web site before I could prepare a useful boot disk.
