About Cool Edit

The disadvantage with Cool Edit 2000 and later versions is that the ”save function” expires after 30 days and you have to register the program.
There is a very old shareware version of Cool Edit from 1996, Cool Edit 1.53. The limitations in this version is that it is only possible to choose 2 functions at a time (like the current versions), in reality the save function and one of the other options. Then the program must be restarted. This very small program has the most important functions of the modern versions of Cool Edit, e.g. normalize, noise reduction, zooming, recording and much more.
In this shareware the save function doesn’t expire, you can use it as long as you wish and it can be run on older computers. I used this program earlier.

I didn't know that. I still use CoolEdit 2002 (unregistered and the save/mp3 function had expired).

Do to one of the built-in features of CoolEdit, it is POSSIBLE to use ALL features at anytime, no matter which 2 functions you have enabled.
Years back when I used CoolEdit 1.5x, I got tired of just the 2 functions. If I wanted to record, that was a function, plus SAVE was an function, but I needed to save my work, re-open CoolEdit, pick the other 2 functions, then work on it, it was a pain, So, I looked at all the options of CoolEdit, and discovered that the scripting mode, allowed one to record ANY function.

So I made scripts for each function, shut down CoolEdit, then loaded it back with 2 diferent functions again, made more scripts, saved it and reloaded with 2 more options. After a while I had saved every single function that is disabled on start-up, and could now be used regardless of the 2 functions one picked at load time.

Basically CoolEdits own ability's, turned a shareware verison into a full version. Now thats one big plus of CoolEdit's old versions. You are still using the shareware version, (and staying legal), and the functions are still disabled in the drop down list, but if you pick and run a script. it can do and permit access to those functions that are not enabled at start-up. Ofcourse this is not as simple as if you purchase the full version, but I dont think the old version can still be purchased.
I find the old version great for beginners of digitial editing, do to the speed and simplicity.

I would guess that would be a very GOOD reason to use a product, since it has been discontinued. Just because a product is discontinued does not make the software title useless, and not worth using. Lots of people on this forum ask for Wordperfect for DOS, thats discontinued.
If you are saying this because there will no longer be tech support. i dont base using a product on tech support since i have never had to ask for tech support for an application. Programs are not too dificult to figure out. Cool Edit is not hard to use at all. if you can not figure it out, then don't use it and use something else.

But your comment goes against the whole idea of this site. Which is to find old software no longer supported by the creators. Cool Edit is a perfect example of a title no longer even under the same author, which was sole creator named David "something", then he created Syntrillium then he sold it to Adobe or was bought out or whatever. I guess Adobe fills the pressure of needing a good audio app to add to its collection now. Thats ok if they will no longer keep it under development since there is always Two Tone's - "Cakewalk", or the Free "Audacity" or Sonic Foundry's - "Sound Forge" or Digidesign's - "Pro Tools", the no longer developed "SAW PRO" and alot more titles.

sorry, i have read that before...i need a copy of the cool edit 2000 plugin tweakin' toys. It is originally made by the now dead syntrillum, and its purpose is:

Tweakin' Toys adds four powerful effects to Cool Edit 2000. Look in the Transform menu under Amplitude for the Hard Limiter. Use it to make your audio as "loud" as it can be without clipping. Try the Pan/Expander when you want to widen your stereo field or pan a stereo file. You'll find the Pitch Bender in the Time/Pitch section-- use it to speed up or slow down your audio. In the "Special" section, Convolution uses impulses recorded in real acoustic spaces to make your audio sound as though it's really in that space!

and since the company is dead, would it be okay and legal to reqest a crack? (you cannot purchase this anymore)...if not, sorry, but i think it might just be okay...

No it would not be OK to request a crack, for a couple of reason's. One being the DCMA, which even if it were OK to crack a piece of software, simply using the tools to bypass the protection is illegal. - this is why DVD's are illegal to copy, even though you have; had a right to a backup copy which is legal under the Fair-Use Law, you can only copy the DVD by decrypting the protection scheme, which is made illegal under the DCMA.
The other reason this is not ok, is that even with the company "dead" as you state, Syntrillium's Cool Edit is a copyrighted title. Therefore someone owns the copyright, and will want to be paid. and then there is Adobe, who now acquired the technology assests, which will most likely make them the new holders of the copyrights, and they will enforce the law to potect their property.
So there is no legal way to use the software without purchasing it.
Then there is the fact that this board is not a warez site, only shareware & freeware, which is legal to host and offer.

I love using CoolEdit 2000, so much so that I bought it. Now, because Syntrillium was acquired by Adobe and desolved there is no way to get regirtrations for it. However, I have this .ece file in another computer and as soonas I get it up and running again I will attach it to a message here and you all can remove the nags and not-functions that occur with this wonderful program. I hate Adobe for desolving Syntrillium like they did, and I look for every opportunity to burn they ass. If anyone can give any assistance to that I would be greatful. ICQ35214380

P.S. I will be getting back into my other computer as soon as I get back to Texas! ;)

Sorry, but that would be illegal. This is not a site which condones or supports such activities.
If a user finds Cool Edit to be useful. It can be used as-is, or one can find a replacement, such as the free editor; Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/)

i love cool edit. i still use ce96 all the time. the only thing it really lacks is the ability to save to much of anything useful besides wav. but with the abundance of wav to whatever encoders, this isnt that bad of a limitation. and 96 is far faster than the newer ones which started to become what i like to refer to as interface-hogs. anyway i would love to see 96 and any other old cool edit versoins supported here.

I tried to send this to the submit email address, but it was rejected, so I'll just post it here:

An old audio editing program called Cool Edit has been bought up by Adobe and converted to Adobe Audition (and increased even more in price). I just found a copy of one of the old shareware (crippleware) versions here:

http://www.sonicspot.com/cooledit/cooledit.html

This is not available anywhere else that I can tell, since the old company has disappeared. Perhaps this would be something to host on your site?

I got:

:) Thanks for posting you links. Although the first two are dead, the 3rd still works! I had ot do a 'almost' complete rebuild on my system and even though I have 3 HD's running (almost 1 TB), I cannot find my original files for CEP! I do radio commercials from my PC at my house, and this program with some plug-ins, does EVERYTHING I need with minimal work!
THANKS AGAIN! :)

Glad it worked,
Yes, my friend worked in a radio station as well. When i went to the station with her while she was working, she too used Cooledit to record her commercials, weather reports. I used to have a demo of a digital audio cart software. But I can not remember it's name.

HI!
I recently bought Cool Edit Pro 2.1 from a second hand store. I'm still learning the prog, and right now I'm using it to edit ringtones for my phone. I'm curious if anyone has any good plugins for it. Will any (if any) of the Audition plugins work with CEP 2.1? What all is out there for it? Does anyone know of a place to get clips and samples, or do I need to make them all myself??
Any help would be greatly appriciated!!!
Thank you!

Thanks for your offer. I thought about getting that same disc online. I just find it more personal if I make my own tones. That way, I can pick my favorite part in a song, or loop a really good riff. That's why I really like this program - so far...

BUT, I'm always up for more ideas... I'd like to make some techno-ish, or rockin tunes/ringtones from scratch, and that's the reason for asking for some plugins or samples or whatever this program can offer. Is CEP capable of making music about like fruity loops??? It kinda looked like it.
If you or anyone has any ideas about add-on thingys for Cool Edit Pro, PLEASE lemme know!!! Thank you!!! ;)

Is CEP capable of making music about like fruity loops??? CoolEdit it a digital audio editor, DAW. You can mix multiple audio tracks, such as wav files. It is not a synth, like fruity loops, but it can be used similar to one, if you use loops and samples. But it does not really create it's own. CoolEdit is basically just a audio editing workstation, as is SoundForge, Audacity, SAWPro. They are built for musicans who usually plug-in their instruments, record and edit their tracks. You might want to look for programs such as Cakewalk, Cubase, Hammer, Reason, Recycle, etc. As these programs are designed for and contain the tools necessary for making music within the program itself.

I purchased Cool Edit 2000. I've been using it since 2001 with no problems until I bought a new computer and tried to load it on the new computer. I seem to remember when I purchased the key initially, I had trouble installing the key to unlock it and tech support had to walk me through changing some file. It's been 5 years since then and I can't remember what file I had to change. I've got a registration key, I just can't make it work. Adobe doesn't offer tech support for Cool Edit. Any ideas?

Hi
I'm new to this Cool Edit Pro 2.1 program..first I'd like to say the program is wild and better than anything I've used. I have the full version registered and all. My problem is the xfm file effects I can use which are cool cause they come with the program. When I try to use files I download such as drive5.dll(plugin effect) the program doesn't read it. and it doesn't even appear on the program. I was wondering if there is away to cnvert the dll files into xfm files so i can use them of is there a site to download more guitar effects xfm files. Can someone help me??

Are the plug-ins designed for Cool Edit Pro?

Also, you might need to install any plug-ins which work into the C:\windows\System folder. Or in the Cool Edit Plug-in folder.

Not sure if you can convert the plug-in from one format to another.

Here is a link to an old thread with some links for software which may be helpful

Hello guys. This is my first post and I paid close attention to the sharp rebukes to some rhetorical questions. Hope I got it right. I need a manual for my CoolEdit Pro 2.1. I've had it since shortly after it premiered, however I've never used it or any wave editor for that matter. Now I want to use it with my Sonar6 Producer but can't find it. Is there any help for a neophyte here?
Thanks

I know this is an ANCIENT version, but has anyone used it? I just need to load some audio and do a little editing, then burn to disc....nothing too fancy.

Thanks!

Seeing as you failed to post into an existing thread, (this one) and you obviously missed posting in the correct forum. You probably also missed the main site, so check out the files here.
Remember to always search before posting a request. Never know, it might already been fulfilled.

Can someone help me??

xfm are native Cool Edit components (I think). I don't think you'll find any.

Cool Edit also recognizes DirectX plugins. There aren't as many as there are VST, but there are a fair number of free ones. They almost always come with installers, as <geekspeak>you have to pass their name to regsvr32.exe as a parameter to register them as DX plugins.</geekspeak>

Drive5 is a VST plugin. VST plugins are .dll files, and are usually just dropped into your VST folder to install them, and the programs find them the next time they look for plugins.

To use VST plugins with CoolEdit, you need a VST-DX bridge. There are a few out there. I used SpinAudio's free VST-DX Wrapper Lite (worked great in CEP 1.2), but SpinAudio's website has gone belly-up. ummm.. this is oldversion.com... is it available? Should I assist in making it available?

The DX-VST bridge is a DX plugin itself (that's how it appears in CoolEdit) so it has to be registered (this should be done by the install program, but can be done manually). Then it has to be opened in CoolEdit and pointed to your VST plugin folder. Once that's done, you just go to the effect menu, select DX-VST.., and select from your VST plugins. Just don't expect VST plugins to crash any less than they do in other hosts ;)

Hi. I have a bought & registered copy of Cool Edit 2000 1.1 build 2418. (Yes, from way back when I still had Windows ME.) Is it possible for me to download a newer version listed on this board without registration troubles? If so, which ones? Would CE 'Pro' be non-functional to me? Is v. 1.53 higher than version 1.1? They seem to not follow chronological order according to their v. numbers.

Thank you for your time.
This site rocks! :D

Hi guys,

Does anyone any the install files for the FULL PAID version of Cool edit pro v1.1

i have a cd key but my install files are corrupt. it must be version 1.1 because it was the latest that supported the .vce file format that i use for my Interactive Voice Recognition phone system.

I spent hours looking on the web for install files for the full version but all i get is the demo (even the files on this site are the demo). Adobe / syntrillium dropped the support for the .vce format and no longer have a copy of the installs on file.

i know its a long shot to find the installs but my installation has died.

Please help!
