I have a 512 Kbps connection so I suppose one has to accept some loss of bandwidth somewhere down the line ?
Just out of interest my ISP Teléfonica, has just doubled the speed of all connections absolutely free of charge. I pay €uros 34/month for unlimited use (up and down).

I connected at 685 kbps the first time and then only 340 kbps the 2nd time.

Lots of good info on these forums. Thank you.

Sure, if you have an old box, with atleast a floppy drive, and 2 ethernet cards, your in business.
then just download this free program and write to a floppy disk, and you got yourself a powerful router.
FloppyFW (http://ttp://www.zelow.no/floppyfw/index.html)

another similar tool.

http://people.freebsd.org/~picobsd/picobsd.html

This works with a CD-R, adds more than the floppy routers

Home: I bet is is a joke, probably 45 Kbps!!! LOL, will test when I get home, and post. Going to DSL tomorrow. Hey, that spawns a question. Which is better, USB or ethernet DSL hook-up? My computer only came with USB ports, and I have been advised that purchasing a ethernet card for it shouldn't break my bank, but I don't feel the need to purchase anything, if I don't have to. I "googled" the comparison, and some sites are saying it is not particularly a big difference. Not sure if this was already a topic started on this forum. Thanks for any info.

locustfurnace

It doesn't really matter.
Ethernet is 10/100mbps
USB 1.0 is 11mbps
you DSL will be 1.5mbps or lower
You will have enough bandwidth by choosing either of them.

locustfurnace

That would all boil down to the chipsets. Unless you were to spend a bit more for a Ethernet card for the best of the best. The average cards will most likely use the same as the USB.
As to how much, it is far less than any program.

The best thing bout dial up here is that i get to scam AOL (sorry if thats deemed politically incorrect on this site :D ), been doing it for three years and never paid a cent for my net usage, still when it takes you 2 days to download a film it should be bloody free anyway lol

You need a router to "route" your packets. They don't "blow" they 'route."
What you might have an issue with is the built-in packet filtering, just disable it.

If one box gets 5mbps, and the other only 3mbps, then check the cable, you might have a poor quality cat5 cable. Get a cat5e or cat6 cable instead. Also, you machine being windows 98 may need to be tuned alittle better.

Did you try changing the cable out? Does the cable sit next to any power cords?
What type of Ethernet card is in the win98 box?
Did you tweak the MTU and RWIN on the slower performing machine?

Check here for a howto,

http://www.inboost.com/speed-tweaks/cable-...dem-tweaks.html (http://www.inboost.com/speed-tweaks/cable-modem-tweaks.html)

If your using a Wireless link between the 2 machines, then YES, it will be a bit slower, since the speed rating on all devices in not RealWorld performance.
If you have any Flurescent lights in the room, it can create issues with anything wireless.

The Dude
