OK, recently I installed dx9, and I am now having difficulties. So, I'd like to reinstall dx8.1.

Can I just install 8.1 and it will take, or do I need to somehow uninstall dx9 first?

And, where might I get 8.1 ?
Each time I run the old version of UT, it takes forever to load, and is wacked out pretty much.
When I run direct x dialogue tool it gives me an error, and there is no more 3d accelerator feature present to even test. The error causes the system to hang and I have to reboot each time.

So I either need to reinstall 8.1 and see if it fixes anything, or for someone to tell me what I may be able to do to get the 3d accelerator functioning again. All was well until I pulled this voodoo 3 2000 pci card out, uninstalled the drivers, and did the new install of the radeon.

Using win98se
celeron 800mhz
256sdram
tb santa cruz
radeon 9000pro (this is where my troubles are, and am in need of getting it working properly)
shuttle av18e mobo
lite on cd burner
52xcd
old floppy
40g seagate hd

Isn't 8.1 still available at http://www.microsoft.com/ ?

It is still available, at http://download.microsoft.com/download/whi.../DX81Redist.exe (http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Update/8.1/W982KMeXP/EN-US/DX81Redist.exe)

However, I don't know if it will install over a newer version. The bad news is that DirectX cannot be uninstalled, according to MS.
However, take a look at this website: http://www.freewebz.com/firecat/
The only catch with this is that it doesn't say that it supports uninstallation of DirectX 9.

Nope. The latest version is 9.0.

I didn't see dx8.1 any longer at the ms site. And yes I did see the freewebz one also, and right, it doesn't show anything about uninstalling dx9.

It may be ok, dx9 that is. My troubles may be to just find out how to get the direct 3d accelerator back into the dx diagnostic tool area.

Like it seems I should have it, I know I had it before. Any ideas about that.

Guest, Dx 8.1 is still at there home page. You just haven't looked through their pages enough. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search....en&categoryid=2 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=2) and it's there. It is just a runtime version, though. I don't think it's the full version of 8.1.

Have a look here matey

http://www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html

says it may work for version 9 but support will be added later

It got rid of 8.1 for me cos my video card don't like it so I've got version 7 back on now

It's easy to revert to DirectX 8.1.

Merely boot to the Command Prompt (F8) and type FORMAT C: /U

Oh come on, you don't have that much to reinstall, do ya? ;)

Forgive my n00bish question, what does /U do? heh.

Format C: /U does an unconditional format of the C: drive. Unconditional formatting makes it so the drive cannot be unformatted later.

Anyway, formatting seems excessive in this case, but reinstalling Windows is a viable option.
