Now that today's CD-ROMs are 40 and 50 times faster than their progenitors the problem is that they're too fast. Modern CAV (constant angular velocity) CD-ROM drives require a second or two to spin up before they start reading. That's not a problem if you're copying large amounts of data, but if you just want to view a file or two on a CD or play a game from a CD-ROM, that lag can be annoying.
