You may want to try Filezilla. It is freeware, and a real nice program. You can find it here: http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

So what does Lan and FTP stand for and what do they mean?

LAN = Local Area Network
FTP = File Transfer Protocol

LAN is a connection of computers, hooked up together.
FTP is a protocol for transferring files.

But using messengers does not always work through firewalls. You usually can not script a messenger session to transfer files, or to mirror a directory structure. You can script ftp, sftp, scp, rsync sessions.
I have a mixture of MS Windows, GNU/Linux, OS X, Solaris and other machines. It is by far much simpler to use a file transferring utility to send files back and forth between systems than to send via a messenger type program.
