Could I please have any opinions on the best version to use in Windows XP.
I also run Norton A/V + Personal Firewall so if a compatible version exists I would like to know.
Thanks in anticipation.

You register and pay the fee and then you will get a serial number.

I downloaded Nero from THIS site a few weeks ago and it is telling me I am expired and need a # too. That is after i had this happen before and uninstalled and reinstalled. Why is this happening? I can use the old puter today but really want this program on this puter.
I did a search about this and read about paying or editing the registry. Would the regcleaner progams really work? I dont use warez but I do use freeware sometimes and dont know why I cant use this app??!
Thanks! Chris

Because you had a previous version installed. which was most likely a trial? or demo version. so by updating the program to the newest version, it just wipes out al your remaining trial time.
you can edit the registry to remove all the nero entries, not too simple to do. another reason to backup before install apps. atleast you shoudl backup the registry. then you can always replace the registry to a state before you installed the newer/older verison.

all the NERO's on this site will be trial ware/ shareware, not full versions, so you are not going to get more time adding different versions ontop of previously installed ones.

I thought i had posted links for some FREE cd-r apps, i dont like Nero myself. Do to it's lack of supporting the ROMEO file format. I usually just use NTI CD Maker under Windows, or Gcombust under UNIX, supports the Rock-Ridge format.

Downloading Nero doesn't work. When I open the Nero Burning Rom, the program that actually lets you burn CDs, it asks for a serial number.

locustfurnace

Did you have a previous version installed of NERO?
Nero is not free, it is a shareware title, so it is possible the older versions did have a time limit to them, which would have expired, therefore forcing the need for a valid registration.
you might want to try the newest version from their website. or try the NTI CD Maker

LOL clear as MUD? i have been using NTI in one form or another on a windows box for years, since the days of my 1x burner. I've never had any problems with it. or had any complaints from those who used it. It all depends on what you wanting to do with a burner, i only burn data, backups, and recovery data. maybe it does not do well on music. i dont know, never used it for music.
With the layout of the older Neros, i did receive many complaints on its UI. Not sure on it today as i have not used it in months, or longer. I mostly now just use Gcombust, since i build alot of Rock-Ridge formatted Disks. Nero does not support the Romeo format, just Joliet, so your limited on filename lengths, while NTI supports ROMEO which will give you the ability to make filenames much longer and more understandable, 128 characters in filename.
Ofcourse one could also go to the UDF format, which is supposed to support filenames up to 256 characters, but from all the complaints i seen on the NERO UDF, not one has yet be able to use the 256 characters in the filenames whle using NERO.

About the only thing i can think thats a plus with NERO is the ability to create the El Toritto formatted disks (bootable).
I do not like Neros cute little iso image format, its not a true iso, as they made it into one of their own formats, so you need to use NERO to burn their formatted iso images, i want a program that can create a proper ISO image, if i plan to use that iso image as a loopback filesystem. and i never had a problem with NTI making a useable ISO image for such purposes.

I copy musics CDs to keep the original in the house and a copy in the car (so when the dogs walk on 'em, i dont care) and Netscape to keep a copy here and one at my parents cuz I am their computer guru-goddess ala KimKomando (LOL).
When I open Nero it asks what I want to do and I tell it copy, then it tells me to insert the original disc and it copies it then it tells me to insert a blank disc. It writes to it and is done.
I really dont know about file formats except JPEGs and havent even downloaded any music from the web! (but I did download Radio-Netscape radio and I LOOOOOVE IT!)
WHEN I tried NTI it just sat there and told me to select the cdrw and I did then it wouldnt do anything else, not copy the disc or anything! So I am gonna crank up the W98 puter and do it easily on Nero.! I was sent to Nero because of the ease of use and I wasnt steered wrong!

thats good. the reason the NTI sat there and did nothing is most likely due to that little fact that (windows) CD software, does not work on all CD burning hardware, so your CD Recorder must not have been one supported by NTI.
When i bought my then new 24x burner, it came with NERO, and my NTI did what you say, sat and did nothing, so i had to wait til the newest title fro NTI came out and i bought it and used it.
the file formats i spoke of, are not the same as JPEG. i am referring to the file format, such as the name. JPEG being a container format.
but thats another story, and another subject : )

I personally prefer the command line cd burning titles. no muss no fuss, just type of out the commands and it works, i am not sure of any CLI titles for windows though.

KimKomando? LOL, never heard that one : )

hmmmm, never looked through the help files on NTI, did try on Nero, but then, they were mostly in german, and very incomplete.
i guess it would depend on also what NTI software you were using, since they have several titles, from CD Buring, to Backup titles. or older or newer verisons.

contact ahead from their website , a trial version should function for a period although some functions may not be accessible

alternatively try one from the oldversion start page, not much different from the newest version anyway, but either way you will have to pay to use the full version, as you have to buy a serial key, BE WARNED, using cracks and serial keys downloaded from the internet is illegal ,and also many software titles will not update they will detect it is not a properly registered copy and some even cease to work after you have tried to update them, its far easier to purchase a key in the first place, i personally use nero and it is well worth the money, I am in no way doubting your honesty just merely giving advice learned from personal experience.

you have to use a paid-for serial number, just typing anything randomly is not going to cut it.
you can check the past forums postings for possible alternative apps, some are even free, but the freebies will be much harder to learn.
you can try a copy of NTI CDMAKER, but you also have to be certain these titles support your burner, as not all CD programs can use any hardware.

That is why you should pay for your copy; you get what you pay for, or don't pay for.
Use a freeware alternative

Anything that bypasses the authors intended way to control access to the program is a violation, and anything that can circumvent the files protection would fall under the DMCA (Digitial Millenium Copyright Act). And makes use of such a tool illegal. Which includes serials, keygens, cracks, patches possible illegal dongles as well, if that was ever a problem.

Sorry Locustfurnace you are probably right. If you had a legal app. and you wanted a s/n you would go to say google and type XXXXX + application name, but this could also work for an illegal source for serial numbers.

If you had a legal app and wanted a serial number??? using that googled serial would be illegal.
You dont pay for the software/application, what your paying for is the license to use the software. which usually amounts to a serial number.

The cash you pay for Microsoft Windows, is not to purchase the actual code, its the obtaining a license to run the software.
Microsoft owns the software code and can restrict what you do with the code, you purchase the license to be able to install and run the software according to the EULA (End User License Agreement). so there really is no legal app, just legal serials (license) and illegal license's.

There are too many software license's to list here, some are free, some free with restrictions, some commerical. You can read the many types of license's here

If you cant get the Nero to work, this could be due to previously having an older version installed then uninstalled. which would expire any new trial periods.
If you do not wish to buy a license, then you can try an alternative to Nero, such as NTI, or a number of different cd recording apps.

There does exists a few FREE cd recording apps.

to supply serial numbers is illegal, the nero burning rom software usually asks for a serial number after the trial period expires, after which if you wish to carry on using the software a serial number is acquired by purchasing the full version from the developers, please note this site deals with mainly old versions and freeware and shareware,

Sorry Simon

What you ask is illegal. OV isn't a crack/serial/patch site. It is a repository for old versions (hence the name) of programs. While we can and do help you to find the older copies of programs the buying of serials is up to you. If the members of OV were to start posting/emailing serials out, how long do you think it would be before this site was closed for Copyright violations?

If you seek a program do a search first, chances are it is already here somewhere. If not but you find requests for other versions of the same program add your request to the list.

If no topics are added for your request start your own. But please, don't ask for, or post serials/cracks/patches or the links to such here.

Did you pay for the license? or did you download from a warez site? If you paid, then it would be legal, if you did not pay anything, then your using an illegal version.
Restore your system from backup, prior to when you installed nero, then you would have it to install the legal copy you own.

Where to get NERO serial number (https://secure.nero.com/us/secure.asp)

This is the only place you'll get the serial number on OV.

This site is for Old Versions, Demos, free ware and shareware plus you can get some good advice here as well.

The advice of the day is: BUY YOUR SOFTWARE. In the event you can't afford it read the forum, there is always free alternitives being suggested.

I thought of buying Nero, but i just lost my job. So, at this point, I can't afford to buy Nero. I did manage to get some serial numbers off the Kazaa, and I downloaded Nero from Old Version.com, but i don't know where to enter the serial number?

I was just reading another thread where it was made clear that posting serial numbers for programs was illegal. I have an old version of nero(5.5.5.3) that came bundled with a CD burner. I loved the way the software worked but it is on an ancient computer and I can't find my original disk. Is there a place on the program itself where I can locate the serial number of my legally obtained software so I can use it on my new computer?

Posting serials is illegal.
Question. Check under the About toolmenu. It may be located under the help menu.

Does the splash screen show the serial?
Many apps will have this info on the splash screen.
If it does appear here, just hit the Print Screen key, to grab a screen shot. Then open MS Paint and hit Paste. then you can copy down this info.

Nero website tells you how to find the serial number in 5.x.x.x.
Using regedit..........its in the HKLocal Machine, Software, Ahead folder
Check the Nero website for exactly where
I can't remember but I found mine
However, if your 5.5 came bundled...........forget it unless you are using the same CD Rom drive it came with
Nero's only solution is for you to buy Nero 6!! Ain't it wonderful? Even if you don't want or need all the new things they put in 6.

ya cannot retrieve the serial number using regedit unless it has been inserted in the first place by registering the software for which you will need to BUY a serial number from the program makers

you can not prove that he purchased it , neither can you supply him the serial number HE purchased, so to supply him with a serial number WOULD be illegal,as for the other one why contact him with a link for a 15day trial he already has the software his post states that ? if you had a link for a trial version why contact him anyway you could just put the link in this thread. you need to learn from your past mistakes, let me refresh a few you used to have problems with, this site onlty deals with FREEWARE, SHAREWARE, and demo\trial software. it does not condone the use of pirated software warez or anything of the like. please shock dont offend members as you did so many times in the past by ignoring forum rules, it causes the locking of threads which doesnt help anyone.

You can purchase a code from Nero. If you had a code, then contact Ahead and see if they have you still on record for previous purchase.

if purchased it is on the back of your cd case that the disc came in, if it was downloaded then as LF has stated ahead will still have you on record and should provide you with it if you email or phone them.it is madness yet so many people obtain their serial numbers via the internet and do not print a copy of the email from the developers with the serial number in or at least write it down safe for future reference.

you get the serial codes for all programs that you download by contacting the developers and buying them, all titles that this site deals with are freeware and shareware titles if you like the program then you buy it ,if not search the forums and you will find many freeware titles listed.

There's some little pop up thingy asking for a serial number? Could someone please post that here? Am I the only one with this problem?

HAHAHAHA! Just kidding...

Locustfurnace, you are a patriot and a saint! I'm so used to other forums where if someone posted a repeat question they would be FLAMED to the 7th layer of H-E-double hockey sticks. It was hysterical reading through these posts where the questions above were posted several times on one page and each time you calmly and cooly explained the solution in very diplomatic terms and then recommended very patiently that they look for their answer for at least 3 seconds before posting. And that conversation with Shock?... simply amazing. Everyone who posts to this site is very lucky that you're around to help guide them patiently through all their computer woes. I hope to soon see your name on the ballot for president. You could talk a WMD directly out of Sadam's hands. I wouldn't even be surprised or offended if you deleted this post. You stay so true to the values of this site!

Threads merged.
If you had searched and found this thread you would have gotten an answer to your question already.
No serial numbers are included, you need to pay the creators of the software for the license.
Just as in the website you posted in your reply, the author of those works would like to be paid, so do the software developers. I would imagine the fees are also reasonable for the CD recording software. Far cheaper than developing your own.

So go ahead and pay ridiculous prices for every single little tiny application you need to work your computer. And do that again and again every time they "upgrade" - or downgrade, that is, since they get just worse. Oh, and remember to become Chief Executive Officer before even trying to make use of your computer - you'll have need for the money. Please don't give me that bull.
http://koti.welho.com/asuokas/00000index.htm
The author of this site WISHES to be payed for his work, IF IT IS WORTH MONEY IN CUSTMOER'S OPINION. This is NO COMPARISON for the "blackmail" going on in modern computing - ridiculous prices for needed software that doesn't take much work to make.

hey mate, keep your strap on ,what is the problem with the modern day people of this world making such a big deal out of paying for things,if you are unable or as it seems unwilling to pay for nero then dont use it.throughout these forums there are many freeware alternatives to nero, whats the point in chucking your rattles out of the pram and getting up tight about nothing, nero is excellent software ,perhaps because the developers charge and then in turn spend money developing the software, why people are so relentless in their whingeing for something free is unbelievable.

I realized that I received software with my cd rw burner I can use for burning ISO-images, I just didn't see that earlier because I haven't had much use for that kind of software... so I don't even need nero, or to download anything else. I was not informed enough.
AND THIS IS ANOTHER WAY THAT THE MODERN SOFTWARE PRODUCER PIGS MAKE MONEY, TAKING MAD PRICES FROM PEOPLE WHO DON'T HAVE EXPERTISE AND DON'T KNOW THEY COULD HAVE THE STUFF LEGALLY FOR FREE OR THAT THEY DON'T EVEN NEED IT!!! :D REBELLION !!! REBELLION !!!

locustfurnace
02-20-2006, 01:38 PM
Ah, since I don't run MS Windows these days. I do not need to pay for any software, including the OS.
The whole idea behind Free Software, OpenSource is the freedom you get, by allowing one to possess the source code, to modify the code to suit your needs if the current app does not live up to what you want. Plus, free of cost - for the most part.

Consider my OS is free, my DVD/CD recording tools, web browsers, e-mail clients, ntp, nttp clients music player, Web Server, SQL server, C, C++ tool-chain, IDE's, HTML editors, XML editors, ftp apps, gedcom tools, image views, image editors, photo editing suites, Office tools, are all FREE.

Who's paying? Better yet, the question is, whos' charging for software? Not many in the Free & OpenSource world.
Most of the people coding these software titles are doing it for free because they enjoy coding, but most have day time jobs or are hired through a company who sponsors them to create these works. Such as those who work on coding GNOME, who work and are paid via Sun Microsystems.
Consider MySQL, which is a great database, Used on many webservers. Its FREE to download to use to pass it along to your friends if you want. But how they make money is by offering a support license to big company's. Those company's can pay the developers of MySQL to handle their issues - if they chose to, if they do not wish to pay for a support contract, they don't have to.

As for the Big Pigs, at Ahead. It's not likely.

If you do not like paying for software, don't use the software that requires you to pay for it, you DO have a choice. I've already listed several freeware CD-Recording apps on this site. If Nero wants too much money. Don't pay it. Don't complain either. Just find something else.

Rebel against what? Your "right" to own a computer and use software on it. Thats not a right. You do not have to use a computer, thats a choice. If you want to rebel against the prices of software. Go ahead. But no one is forcing you to pay for software you don't want to use. If the price of Microsoft Office is too much, Pick something cheaper, or even better yet, use a free OpenSource product, such as OpenOffice. It's FREE.
If you don't like paying for Microsoft Windows, Don't use it.
The more people use alternatives to the higher cost apps, the more likely the higher costing apps wont cost as much. Its also possible, that the more people who use freeware alternatives the less your data will be locked into a proprietary format.

the reason the nero download asks for a serial number is most likely because the system you have has had a trial version installed before that has expired,.with regards to dead links unfortunately this does happen, they all work when added but obviously the site has no control of whether they become inactive afterwards, heres a couple of freeware titles on this page. http://www.webattack.com/freeware/gmm/fwcdburn.html

Also, if you find a link for a freeware title in a thread and the link is dead. It would be appreciated if you made mention of this in the thread. This way someone could update the links.

It's likely those threads are old, check the dates when reading past posts. Information on the internet rapidly evolves. Sites which host freeware titles often go from a Free URL host to a paid host. Which changes the address.

I should have made my post a little more clear.
I meant if you found a dead link, to report that in the same thread the dead link appears.
The first link you posted, works. I fixed the link to the first app.
The following links you've posted do not link to any existing threads except for the last one.

One why to do some detective work on your own, and this is how we find the programs also, is by entering the filename of the program into a search engine and examining the links produced. Even when links in threads go dead, the filename is usually the best way to search for that file once again.

simple, try using the system restore and restore the pc to a date before it was deleted, sorry but having it installed previously doesnt really help your case at all.if you were the original purchaser then perhaps the developers would still hold your purchase details if it was purchased online and help with your problem, but i am afraid as you were not then all you can really do is try the system restore and if unsuccessful then you will have to purchase it from the developers once again or you could try a freeware alternative which you will find in many threads here on the forums this thread included.the supplying of serial keys is prohibited here on oldversion as well as being illegal and carrying a heavy penalty.
