Hi oldversion.com,
you are doing a great thing. This website is about the only place I can download anything for my computer. I can hardly visit any new websites because of my outdates IE. I have version 3 and your old versions only go up to 3.2 which would not be any help to me. Could you please try and add Internet Explorer 4.0 and/or 4.6. Thanks Alot!!

I forgot, but I do have Internet Explorer v4 and v5 on CD (unsure if it's 5 or 5.5).

If you want it, please let me know what type of a connection you have (56k dialup, dsl, cable, etc) and how you would like to receive it (I don't know its file size).

You should try browsers.evolt.org (http://browsers.evolt.org/index.cfm/dir/ie/32bit/) archive of browsers. Here's a link directly to 32-bit versions of Internet Explorer (http://browsers.evolt.org/index.cfm/dir/ie/32bit/).

I recommend downloading 4.01 SP2 (http://browsers.evolt.org/index.cfm/dir/ie/32bit/4.01_SP2/).

That's because that there is a security issue that has been fixed when they released 5.5 SP2. And Microsoft doesn't like to provide support for old products like Windows 95.

:o I tried to find it there also. I could not. The only other thing I can think of to do is Pull it off an old windows verson. If you have windows Me or 98, I would uninstall only what is giving you the problem now and then take my windows 98 disc and reinstall windows and that will put back the older verson. But be sure to back up your important files just to be safe. if you are still useing the same verson. you should be able to reinstall it without loseing anything. I wish you luck. :)

Not in my experience,

IE4.0 actually checks and asks you but if you jump straight to IE5.x there is no option/download/custom setup setting that allows you to add this feature.

Unless I am just completely missing something, I have only ever been able to install these
features when installing IE4.0

Just go out and buy Windows 98 Second Edition and upgrade.

Too bad you cannot uninstall Internet Explorere without removing the whole windows OS.

You can remove IE completely.

98 Lite (http://www.litepc.com/download.html)

It is a small program for free that removes IE 4,5,and I used it with same results on 6.

While at that site you can also read up on
lite 98, I am now using it in all its glory after working out the bugs. It truely is lite and fast. They also have start up and shut down screens that go with the new operating system. I have found that IEradicator works with ME and 2000, I have never tried it with XP.
You can also go to cnet and download this small program.

It leaves only explorer 3.0 on your machine.

I need to download IE 5.5 for my computer because I'm having problems with IE 5.00. IE 6.0 isn't compatible with my OS (Windows 95). So IE 5.5 is the highest upgrade for Internet Explorer I can get. Can I legally request this download? Microsoft kind of left me hanging here. Please let me know if it is illegal. I have no idea since IE has always been a free download.

More specifically, Internet Explorer's page is at:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie-sprynet/ (For the old, old, SpryNet version)
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/ (For the old and new Microsoft versions)

As for TCP/IP stacks, I can't help you there. Windows 95 and up have them built-in, and support most modems and LAN controlls (ie, Ethernet cards). Windows 2000 and XP also have them built-in (can someone confirm NT4?).

As for Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, Windows for Workgroups 3.1, 3.11, they do not have them built in. A certain mailing-list I belong to recommended me Trumpet:

Windows 3.11 WFW does have these built in.
For Win 3.1 you could WinTrumpet.
Windows NT has networking built in, as it is designed for such purposes, being a workstation. As there were "Windows NT Workstations" & "Windows NT Server" versions. NT had networking in its first version.

Do you mean there are not many versions of Internet Explorer at oldversion.com? If you are looking for old versions of Internet Explorer, they can be found at http://browsers.evolt.org/

They are not adding any more Internet Explorer versions to the archive because the file sizes are very large, and it takes up the server space.

Yes. You CAN download a standalone version of Internet Explorer WITHOUT messing up your system. Take look here!

Downloading the file is not the problem. It is when you launch the file (the exe) and it starts to run setup. During setup, it attempts to connect to a Microsoft site and get some additional files. I think Microsoft closed down the site that setup tries to connect to. So just getting the exe file for IE 5.0 or 5.5 isn't enough.

Has anyone had any luck running setup? If so, how did you do it?

Thanks.

when you go to install, select the custom option, then you pick only those items you want. if you have the full download, it should not need to go online to install additional items. If it does, it might be due to changes in your OS which require those items.

I have a real antique 166MHz pc on my room.. usually using a 3ghz but that one is not @ my room..
well, since I want to have MSN on my pc, I can only use MSN 5 (lower versions MUST be upgraded) because I have win95. But when I start installing it errors and says You need Internet Explorer 5 installed...
So I surf to windows.com but they seem to push everyone to IE6.. and IE5 is only downloadable for win98 or higher.. PLEASE does somebody have IE5 for win95?
It'd help me a lot installing msn messenger.

Or do you otherwise have a program so I can use MSN 4 or lower?

Please search the forum before posting a thread which has been asked dozens of times, and the same answer is repeated in ech post. Had you searched the forum you would be downloading IE5, instead of waiting for a reply, this is why it benefits you to search.

There is no need to start another thread, which I deleted.
If you dont find what your looking for on the link, then you should just settle for one similar, such as 4.01 SP1
The files your missing should be filled in with 4.01, the suggestion to use IE4 is the minimum, any web browser higher than that would included newer versions, which is what the error message means when it says "Program requires Shell32.dll version 4.71 or higher."
Notice the higher part, this means it is OK to install a version of IE newer than the suggested IE4.

Or, try looking on your Win98 CD.

Wouldn't it be easier just to find the missing file, than to download the whole browser suite?

Some of us still use Windows '95, so we are unable to use I.E. 6. On a happier note, I came across a site that you can download I.E. 5.5, if you would like to upgrade your browser even further. (from I.E. 5.0)

If you had searched the forum, you would have found browsers.evolt.org (http://browsers.evolt.org), with many old versions of browsers including Internet Explorer (http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit). It apperrs that Internet Explorer 2.0 (http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit/2.0) (1.14 MB) will fit on a floppy disk.

locustfurnace
06-14-2004, 08:11 PM
ANY files you want will 'fit' on a floppy. If you want IE 5.5, you can stick it on a floppy. Just zip up the whole folder for whichever browser you want. Then use a file splitting program such as hjsplit (http://www.freebyte.com/hjsplit/), (a free program), split the files at 1.40megs.
Then copy the split files to floppy, and rejoin them once you have copied them over to the system you want to install the program on.
Even better is to use a program such as FileMaven, which works across the serial ports to file share the systems. You can find a link for Filemaven (a free program) in a previous thread here.

This request has been asked many _many_ times, please take the time to search before posting a request.
You can download older versions of web browsers at http://browsers.evolt.org/

As far as running IE on win98se, I presently run IE 6 on Win98se without a problem.
There are also many other threads which list alternative browsers, which I currently use http://www.flashpeak.com/sbrowser/ which is much safer/better to run than IE.

HAHAHAHA

Netscape4 bites!!! It uses JSS which current netscape versions no longer use...

Get the most current web-browser you can, NS4 does not support CSS...

Pages that use CSS (like my own: drop.blazted.com) will not look right at all.

I define my own CSS when viewing any webpage. So even if the browser does support CSS, I would not see your web page as designed anyhow.
Most of the times i just stick to ignoring all layouts.
When I use a text-only browser, it ignores css anyway.
Most web designers should build their pages so that there is ALT text as well as graphics too. As not everyone cares about the presentation of webpages.

someone out there please help me!! i finally figured out that i could put explorer 5.5 on windows 95 so i did, i was working with 4.0 that someone installed a long time ago. got it unzipped, now there is a file with tons of stuff in it!!! what in the world do i do with it?? do i go to each thing, (advauth.cab, decom 95, lelpkad.cab, webfldrs.cab, to name just a few!!!!), and unzip each of them or has it taken over the old 4.0 that was already installed? when i click on the 4.0 internet explorer comes on, when i click on the 5.5 i get just the winzip screen asking if i want to unzip it again, i have already been told it is unziped, i don't want to have a thousand copies so i don't unzip it again. can some one please take pity on me and tell me what's up? i'll never be lucky enough that it just took over 4.0!! i can't be that lucky!! out on a limb!!!

Look for an exe file that includes "setup" in the name and run it.

Something Like:ie5setup.exe
setup.exe
ie55setup.exeor similar.

It will extract what it needs from the cab files and install the application.

Well, I ran the Internet Explorer 5.5 like you said. Thank you very much for telling me how. But somehow along the way I knocked out all of my internet, and that was Tuesday!! I had to wait until now, Saturday, 3:00 in the afternoon for a new CD to put
into the computer to put it back on!! I live in Holland and they do not do things very quickly around here! Actually I got another one from the internet company but it was the wrong one so I had to wait for a second one. I hope that you forgive me, and, if you ever help me again, please don't think I'm ungrateful, I just did something wrong!! I think that's why my friends call me Calamity Vickie! Hurricane Vickie sometimes! I can really do some special things to a computer that no one else in the world can do!!
Anyway, now that I'm back on line, the 5.5 works great! :o :)
