I guess the oldversion webmasters should be flattered that the spam merchants think enough of this forum to take the time to sign up so they can post. But it does litter the forum up a bit.

Perhaps you can make them jump through another hoop.
Is e-mail verification turned on?

I guess the oldversion webmasters should be flattered that the spam merchants think enough of this forum ...It is perhaps a matter of perception of potential suckers

When we had the Invision Power Board current users generally ranked around high teens with the change of board its suddenly in the low hundy, someone cooked the books, perhaps newer is not always better.

It seems that some of the "bots" have learned how to register and do e-mail confirmations....

At another forum (about flyfishing), the webmaster is spotting new "members" who are actually bots with an easy trick.

EDIT: Details of "trick" to foil spambots removed, lest too many spammers read and develop countermeasures. By now the forum administrators have had a chance to read, and decide whether or not it's worth implimenting.

It easy to set up on a vBulletin (not sure about other board software, but if you can Edit: detail removed, it might work out).
We've only had two sucessful spam posts in the past month.
He's been deleting at least three spambot accounts a week by this method (I spotted three that registered yesterday).

the thread was posted regarding the amount of spam rubbish was popping up on the site at the time, not many notice this as it is deleted as soon as it appears.

Looks like the spambots are getting more persistent.

Here's a link to a searchable database of known spammers.
Stop Forum Spam (http://www.stopforumspam.com/)

If you check out new registrations before they validate, you can ban or delete before they do their dirty business.....

This one checks out several databases....

I was just suggesting some tools to spot them before they spam.

For instance the profile for "zarim" indicates that it registered on 12/10/09.
http://forum.oldversion.com/members/zarim.html

It didn't start posting spam until 8:34 AM on 12/11/09
http://forum.oldversion.com/general-discussion/6085-brand-new-unlocked-apple-iphone-3g-s-16gb-200-sale.html
http://forum.oldversion.com/programs-support/6086-brand-new-unlocked-nokia-n97-32gb-200-sale.html
http://forum.oldversion.com/requests/6087-brand-new-unlocked-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-400-sale.html

If an administrator or moderator had checked the account during the interim, he/she would have found that this is a Nigerian spambot that's been active since 5/9/09.
See: http://www.stopforumspam.com/search?q=zarim

Checking the username often isn't enough. The e-mail and IP addresses should also be searched.

From the front page 12-15-09, 9:11 AM EST......

Welcome to our newest member, e_center09

A quick check reveals that this is a Nigerian spambot that's been known since November 6th.

BotScout.com: Search Results (http://www.botscout.com/search.htm?sterm=e_center09&stype=q)

It hasn't posted any spam yet, why give it a chance?

It's getting ridiculous now, when I check for new posts, I get multiple pages of spam.

Administrators... Have you tried this VB modification yet?
http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=248042

At njflyfishing.com, I've only have to remove one or two spammers a month manually, since the owner installed it.

The current spam appears to be mostly from "sleeper bots", that joined in February, and just became active now.

Since I can't "see" IPs & etc, all I can suggest is banning members who joined in (or after) February, haven't made any "legitimate" posts, and gave "Spain" as a location. I have a feeling that they're all the same bot.

In or after February nice,oh well that counts me out,Pmsl that's got to be the most profoundly dumb reasoning yet given that a bot may be activated any time from zarims post onwards,IP checkers are almost certainly a waste of time as most people who are adept at using a pc can change their IP`s without a problem or use an anonymous proxy ,email header checking and verification can work if administered correctly but only to a certain degree as anyone can go to an internet cafe and set up a new account on an anonymous machine and send whatever they like,if posts are in a foreign language Deutche ,Italiano,Francais,Arabe, etc who is going to validate what is written,Google lmao!!,not very accurate at the best of times.
I propose a change in policy and site rules to quickly and efficiently eradicate the idiots,1:general discussion be solely in regard PC solutions,workarounds.2:Any account advertising in anyway any products, torrents or anything not germain to site are deleted and IP address be blocked.3:all url`s that lead to any marketing spam that are posted lead to instant banning from site and are blocked and so on for if all can post whatever they like in discussions then all spammers and phish miesters will have a field day from day one, incorporating spammers blocklist would be helpful but so would strong site policing and policy.
Kick them to the curb (:^D)

You can't just install some anti-spam controls, and forget about it....
Eventually, they'll find a way in....

Even if you add "human verification" to the registration process, sleepers like "matthew" can come alive after years of dormancy.
"Bots" don't get bored...

IMHO: This is why you haven't had any legitimate posts (except for me complaining), since August of last year.
