Issues with Yahoo IM in Trillian but not MSN

I started a new job and downloaded Trillian. It installed fine, and I had no problem with my MSN accounts, but my Yahoo accounts would get automatically logged off after a second or two. So I tried downloading Yahoo IM. Again, downloaded and installed fine, but I could not log on. It would either just time out, or log me on for a split second, and then log me back out again. Tried fiddling with proxy settings. That didn't help. A coworker said he uses an older version, so I tried downloading it from here but I got the same behavior. Does anyone know what I can do about this? I know I can use the web-based Yahoo IM, but I really would prefer to use Trillian, or if I have to regular Yahoo IM. Thank you!

Never used Trillian. I have been using GAIM (aka PIDGIN) (http://pidgin.im/pidgin/home/), for numerous years with no issues logging into either ICQ, Yahoo or AOL. As I type this. I am logged into the 3 services mentioned.
Unlike Trillian, Pidgin is freeware.
