Most professional spammers these days are actually "Bots".

At another vb board, we added a mandatory, non-standard field to the registration information.

A "bot" will normally either not fill it out, or enter it's username or e-mail address.

If it doesn't fill it out - it doesn't get access
If it uses it's username or e-mail - it's easy to spot and delete or ban.
