Which features are special in Ver 3.0 that you are interested in?

Therese you are correct, it is retail software.
you can still obtain qbasic from your old win95 cd's if you want to mess with some old basic. but, without purchase you can't legally obtain Visual Basic.

if you really need a visual basic program you might want to consider using a distro of Linux or a *BSD derivative, and obtaining one of the GPL'd, freeware Visual Basic replacements.

Can you guys please help me, I am looking for a prog to edit vb with and then save as a .exe file. I am not ripping someone elses work btw, this is for personal use only. I have tried Neoscripter trial but it doesnt have the ability to save as .exe. I cant afford the money to buy visual studio (latest) and I am wondering if you know of older versions or an old program that does the same thing.
Thank you

I have not looked for any.
mostly i just do C, C++, python, perl, awk, and shell programming.

which you can get plenty of free c tools for windows.
i also posted links elsewhere on this forum to free C tools

How about an older clone that competed with Visual Basic 4 ? and that is free??

"Envelop Basic was originally intended as a clone and competitor of MS-Visual Basic 4 running under MS-Windows 95 or NT. The project was abandoned in 1996 by Cimlinc Inc and the the product is in the public domain without support. It includes a tutorial but is a " bit much " for a beginner trying to learn computer programming. For advanced programming it supports polymorphism, object inheritance, encapsulation, ODBC, OLE2, and MAPI."

and another - not the same, but might be OK as well

"Rapid-Q is a cross platform BASIC programming language capable of generating GUI and CONSOLE applications (including CGI applications). It directly supports MySQL, DirectX, a bit of Direct3D, Sockets, a bit of COM, component/object programming, and many other nice features. Rapid-Q is currently available for Windows 95/98/NT/2000, Linux/i386, Solaris/Sparc, and HP-UX. Although Rapid-Q is still in Beta (for over a year already), it is fully functional and FREE! "

"XBasic is a 32/64 bit programming environment designed to create applications in Windows and Linux. It is a freeware comprehensive programming environment for people with an average knowledge about programming.
XBasic has in some areas similarities with QuickBasic and in some methods it looks a bit like Visual Basic but the are by far not the same thing (anymore).
XBasic shares a range of default programming features that can be found in Quickbasic and Visual Basic, however XBasic's scientific library offers a wider range of functions and is by far a couple of hundred times faster than QB and VB. Another extra is that XBasic does not have memory limitations like you have in QB and VB (even today)."

Ms Visual Basic is a retail app, you can not download it legally. You may be able to find it on ebay.com

You can find some Visual Basic clones here on the forum.
