got to go with OTHER. THE USER

spyware is only effective if you dont pay attention to your system, while installing apps.
first, make a backup of your registry files. keep em safe.
run a firewall - blocks (some) spyware from connecting back to server.
examine your ADD/REMOVE menu, look for something you didnt install. and remove it.
do a ctrl|alt|del, do you know what programs are running and what they are for? learn what you install and make sure something is not running you didnt install.

remove apps from loading via the MSconfig utility.
delete you cache daily, as well as cookies and the INDEX.dat file (only via DOS mode)
get a file shredder and dont delete files, shred them (overwrites clusters XX amount of times with 1's and 0's)

if you install an app that has spyware. just reboot to DOS, and replace the reg file with the backup copy.
backup your system before adding new apps. then if you get infected with spyware, restore to previous state.

if running a firewall. check the log, look for connections to services you arent running. if only running web browser. there should be no other ports being used, except for 53 -DNS, and your dhcp server.

look at spyware awareness sites, look at the listing of known offenders and dont download their apps.

you should not be solving the problem after the fact, you should prevent it beforehand. why install yet another app to fight another app. if ya didnt install the spyware app in the first place, you would have 2 less apps installed, running, eatting resources

This is a very good site about spyware (http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/), or parasites as they are called in the site.

They also give advices about how you can get rid of these programs.

I always see where it says to back up your registry files. I can do alot on the computer but I have NO IDEA HOW TO BACK UP REGISTRY FILES. I really would like to know how to do this.

I dont use anti-spyware programs. I used to use Zone Alarm on my old computer and really LOVED it! This new one is supposed to have some sort of built in firewall. When the warranty period is up I will probalby try ZA again but I dont really like the new version. It seems more difficult to use than the OLDVERSION!

for win9x users, cant say for certain on the others just now
to back up registry locate the 2 files in C:\windows
user.dat and system.dat
there is your registry, if anything happens to them, you can replace the corrupt versions with the ones you backup - copy to cd/floppy/zip.

there is also a command line utility for backing up called cfgback.exe on the CD.

if something goes wrong, you can boot to dos, delete the corrupt version, and restore with these versions.

also, another good thing you can do is compact the registry, i wont go into detail, since it can be complex, but it trims out unecessary reg entrys. and can make the registry smaller therfore faster to load, as well as backup.

if you use MSbackup, it also will backup the registry, and can be restored easily.
you can also make a dos batch file backup your registry on a daily basis, or each time you reboot the system.

another good tool (for win9x) is the sfc.exe or System File Checker, included with windows, you can use it to restore corrupt files, go to the run command, type sfc. and run it, learn about it some, before deleting the files, since some will have been changed with updates. but it can be very useful when a system file gets corrupted.

LOL this is funny, I was just demo-ing this program for an opinion, for someone. and it pretty much does - most likely, exactly what you are asking for.
It combines spyware protection, URL filtering, firewalling, AND Pop-up Bubbles.

With this program and its spyware removal you can disable the spyware from working, BUT if a program needs the spyware to function, you can re enable it, use the program, then disable the spyware once again.

Give it a demo, see if you like it.
It is called Armor2net personal firewall, get a trial here.

I heard that AOL v9 is coming out with its very own built-in firewall. They released a beta of AOL9 if anyone feels like giving an opinion about it.

I would download it but...I hate AOL.

More registry tips. For backing up the registry; with windows 9x built in tools.

registry back up's will be stored in CAB file format, located in
C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP
named: rb000.cab, rb001.cab, rb002.cab. .....

you can manually force a registry backup by using the tool C:\WINDOWS\Scanregw.exe
Click Start, RUN, type: scanreg

Scanreg configuration files are located in C:\WINDOWS, named as follows;
Scanreg.ini
regback.ini

in regback.ini you can change some settings, such as the amount of backups to keep, where to keep them, which additional dir to backup as well. whether to optimize the registry.

I added another folder for windows to place my backups to, with less clutter makes it easier to locate them, as follows:

Scanreg.ini
;Backup directory where the cabs are stored is
; <windir>\sysbckup by default. Value below overrides it.
; It must be a full path. ex. c:\tmp\backup
;
BackupDirectory=C:\WINDOWS\SYSBCKUP\regback

another note is that if you want to edit the registry, use the regedit program.

I had already explained how to back up your registry to you in another posting on this board ( which I am aware you had already read it, this was just to get your attention again!). But i was going through some OLD apps to give to OV, when i seen an app i thought you might want to try
it is called WinRescue, and it is designed for backing up the registry

Registry Crash Protection
Recover from a Crash in Two Minutes!!!
WinRescue backs up the Registry and important configuration files, packs the Registry, troubleshoots problems, provides fivefold protection from system crashes, backs up any and all files that you desire, and much more...

I have found that if you remove some spyware, KazaA will not work properly. I agree that this extra stuff should be removed. Then I remembered, DUH, KaZaA works off of "spying" to give you those ad monsters.

I have found that if you remove some spyware, KazaA will not work properly.* I agree that this extra stuff should be removed.* Then I remembered, DUH, KaZaA works off of "spying" to give you those ad monsters.
a simple, yet time-consuming way to keep using kazaa, and reduce the amount of "spying" performed by kazza is to block the ad sites that they use.

you need to figure out what site address is being used by those ads servers. which you do by shutting down all programs, except for the Kazaa.

you need to monitor all outgoing data requests to those sites.
so you need a network tool to view this for you.

once you have have the sites, you find a text file called HOSTS on your system.
C:\Windows\Hosts
in the hosts file, you will not too much. Just usually a simple listing as so

#
#
127.0.0.1 localhost

this is a loopback IP for your system. because some programs require their servers to use an IP address, this ip address of 127.0.0.1 was assigned for the local file system to use.

how can you use this to block ad sites. VERY SIMPLE
any site who likes to send you an add, such as - for example
http://big-annoying-ad.net
will request the DNS to locate the IP address for this site, which is resolving the URL to IP numeric address. So that the http://big-annoying-ad.net will resolve to 201.13.x.x.
then once resolved, the server sends you an ad.
so, by using the hosts file, you would add the hostname http://big-annoying-ad.net as so.
127.0.0.1 http://big-annoying-ad.net

now, when the site wants to send an ad to you. your computer looks in the hosts file, and see's that http://big-annoying-ad.net is on the loopback device, or local host filesystem (which it really is not), but we fool the site into believing the adserver is really out loca machine, and since the ads are not on the system, you do not get any ads. you end up with a little box with a red X in it.
currently i have a hosts file with some 24,000 ad sites blocked, by this simple approach.
it is easy, can be "updated" by you in seconds, no need to download another program.
it can also work in the reverse as well.
you can add sites to the host file to help speed up connecting to those site you visit more often.
but the approach is that you do not use the 12.7.0.0.1, you would use the sites real ip address in the listing.
such as

10.0.3.4 my-favorite-site.com

this will now skip the DNS lookup, and make going to web sites alittle faster for those who are listed.

they are examples, made up out of thin-air to fill in the examples.

well, if they sue when someone says they are "spyware", just change the term from, "spyware" to "tracking" or "invasive" or "snooping" or even better yet, refer to them as "public announcers", defined as, "software which takes your personal net activites and makes em "public" to the highest bidder"

What you should do is copy the exact error message, paste into google, make sure to quote it such as, "antivirus stalls bla bla bla."
If it has been reported before, then you should find an answer.

Do a control|alt|del to see what is all running. Its possible something is running that should not be. kill the process.
Run the spyware checks on the system, see if it discovers any.
Make sure you update to the latest for each spyware app. Does no good running outdated definitions.
Is the anti-vris app set to scan on shutdown? If so, might not be a problem, just normal operations of the program.
Alot of the times the trojan is 'in use' and can not be deleted. So you would not be able to clear it. You can track it down and delete in via DOS. But only if you can use DOS.
Try to quarantine the trojan. If possible.

What i think about the best spyware program is Pestcontrol or Spybot search and Destory..... Pestcontrol updates are good..........IF YOU CAN'T REMOVE A SPYWARE PROGRAM, and you use Windows XP Pro or Home edition..... USe System REstore that will restore to the perviuos state.........but it has to be turned on if not you have to use the spyware scanners.........

Also if you are infected by COOLWEBSEARCH use the CWS shedder, the problems are that your homepage get changed all the time... or popups........internet preformance slowdown. this is the link to download it.........scan it and see if infected...ifso click fix it.......that should fix it .... :D

After downloading visit this site: http://www.anti-trojan.net/

Here you'll find the developer's statement that this is now freeware. At the bottom of this page the devoloper has included a KeyGen for you to create a serial to be able to register and use this program.

(One of the few legal KeyGens on the web LOL)

Just a little note Anti-Trojan 5.5.421 is now freeware. (It is an earlier version of a2 personal)

Take note, although it is free, it may not be useful for complete trojan removal.

Customers, who bought Anti-Trojan can get a free unlock code for Anti-Trojan here to be able to use it. The software is therefore freeware now. But no signature updates will be published for Anti-Trojan in the future.

I heard that AOL v9 is coming out with its very own built-in firewall. They released a beta of AOL9 if anyone feels like giving an opinion about it.

I would download it but...I hate AOL.

SpywareBlaster 3.3

Author: Javacool Software
Date: 2005-03-10
Size: 2.4 Mb
License: Freeware
Requires: Win All

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

Editors Note: If you receive an error that files are missing when starting SpywareBlaster, please download the Microsoft Visual Basic Run Time files. These files are required for any program that was coded in Visual Basic and are often not included to make the download small. If you have never downloaded a program that needed these files, you may not have them installed. Its a small, safe download and something you may need again later.

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

Spyware, adware, browser hijackers, and dialers are some of the fastest-growing threats on the Internet today. By simply browsing to a web page, you could find your computer to be the brand-new host of one of these unwanted fiends!

The most important step you can take is to secure your system and SpywareBlaster is the most powerful protection program available.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

SpywareBlaster can help keep your system spyware-free and secure, without interfering with the "good side" of the web. And unlike other programs, SpywareBlaster does not have to remain running in the background.

SpywareBlaster is freeware for personal and educational use.

The version adds Firefox 0.9 support and fixes several bugs.

It's not a fad, running cwshredder.
Cwshredder is used to remove Coolwebssearch. Which actually inhibits spyware removers from being able to run. Coolwebssearch, closes several anti-spyware apps when you try to open them. Also, 'hijack this' stops from another annoyance, that of web browser hijacking, also, not covered in your standard spyware removers.

Now, before you can begin to scan for spyware, which may be disabled, you need to remove the locks on your spyware removers. This is how spyware creators have begun to cripple the effectiveness of spyware removers.

Spyware Doctor is a great spyware blocker and it has a nice interface. Other than that Microsoft Anti-Spyware is top notch, I suggest teaming them up. The only negative is that Spyware Doctor isn't free.

Re: Armor2net personal firewall
But is it any good Locust? Ive been to the homepage and it looks fair enough, im running Zone Alarm Pro at the minute but the idea of having instant notification of unwanted apps trying to installs or access sounds like a winner to me, so if anyone can give me a comparison between the two products id be very grateful. thanks :)

I used to use SpySweeper v3 but switched to Aluria, its found loads of stuff that SS v3 didnt and my pc runs a hell of a lot quicker now.

Any good at packet filtering, Yes, most Firewalls are, packet filtering for home users is bascially very simple to accomplish.
The Armour2Net package combines the packet filtering, spyware cleaner.
Its fairly stright forward to use. If someone wants a firewall but really has no desire to learn the internals or bother configuring much on the firewall, then this app should suit ones needs well.

Do you mean the Index.dat file? or which one in particular?
If you still have an older version of Windows, you can remove any file, simply boot into DOS, and remove the file.

The bottom line is that no 1 product does it all, my experience in the PC repair business is when I get a badly infected PC in the shop is It takes at least 3-6 different products to get the PC fully cleaned. I use Spybot, AdAware, Microsoft anti spyware beta, (I hear pest patrol is excellent also) for cleaning adware, malware, spyware. I use a good antivirus of choice(Symantec) for viruses and then Last but not least a full system scan with TDS3 for trojans. I also notice that mal-ware sometimes installs itself as a windows "service" and must be shut down prior to cleaning, or it just reinstalls itself.

An example why a DOS anti-virus programs, such as F-Prot, works well. Can be run on a floppy or bootable CD. Reboot the system on the floppy/CD and run the anti-virus app.
There are several bootable CD's available which come packed with very useful tools these days for repairing a system, such as UBCD (http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/)
