Recently at Freedomlist, I've seen some requests for various versions of Juno software.

Even though Juno is still offering free services, they are no longer "pushing" them. It takes a little effort to find the software on the Juno website without signing up for a premium service. Other people simply prefer the older versions because of resource problems or OS compatability.

I've been sending them to http://www.junoaccmail.org/download.htm , but wonder if you would consider them worthwhile.

I would not mind hosting it, but what is the point if it is on that site?

Can someone inform me of the latest version of Juno?

Thanks.

I haven't checked it out, but I think version 6 is about to be released or perhaps it's already been released. Rumors indicate that it's similar to Netzero and uses 3rd party e-mail clients for mail instead of it's own software.

If true, one of the advantages of any of the old versions (through v 5) will be that they provide an e-mail solution for people without internet access. Version 1.49 provides an e-mail solution for people with Windows 3.1.

AFAIK Juno 6.1.2 is the latest release. But it does not seem to be available as a stand-alone download. They are now steering ppl to a file called Juno QS or Quick Start. After downloading and installing QS it connects and retrieves the full app. I'm not sure if the full app will even work without QS installed.

BTW, if you ever run across a copy of Juno 1.0 please post it. That would make a nice find. The earliest version I've seen is 1.49 (thanks to pete). And that version has a 1998 date, but 1.0 goes all the way back to 1996, the beginning of Juno.

In any case, best of luck with your site, ABlix. It's a great idea.

I have been using Juno version 4 for the past few years, and have not had any problems with it. Users of version 5 (which has a lot of new features) have informed me that they would like to DOWNGRADE back to version 4 and ask me where they could find it, since Juno refuses to provide any version except 5. This site indicates that there is a version 6 available somewhere, but I can not find it on the Juno.com website.

I agree that version 4 is less troublesome than version 5. However, version 5 has better e-mail enhancements.

Version 6, may be off topic for an "Oldversion" message board. BUT:

I'm not sure that version 6 has been "officially" released yet, so use with caution, it may not be ready for prime time yet. I had to look very hard to find a direct link on the Juno website.

Having said that:
http://dl.juno.com/pub/juno/quickstart/juno.exe

I haven't installed it yet, but rumors indicate that it's very similar to Netzero, they've even opened the POP/SMTP servers to third party e-mail software. E-mail setup instructions are at:
http://www.juno.com/support/email/email_setup.html
Note: The SMTP is blocked unless you are using a Juno or Netzero connection (I have Juno mail working with Outlook Express).

Haha, I've been using Juno 1.38 (I think) since I got it on disk in the mail in... 1993? The software keeps trying to upgrade me to the annoying 1.49, but I never let it.

If you need 1.38 or 1.49, let me know. They still work using the dial-up local access numbers and they work fine. They store mail as text files and are generally easy to get around. Oh, and you can hack some of the icons in the program. Good stuff.

I used to have a Juno 3.0 disk, but every time I installed it and checked my mail I was force-fed an upgrade to 4.0. So I'm not sure that there's any point in trying to find it.

REF JUNO:
Recently upgraded to ver 6.0, I have win95B, it did not work well at all....that's how I found this site and re-installed original JUno ver5.? and all in well in juno land. I suspect it's not very capable with win95 versions. "For what its worth, my two cents"
 :( <_<

Thanks for the responses. Here's some background. I've got 2 computers (one running Juno v3.0 Build 13, one running v5.0). One my v3.0 system (using Win98), I can click on my Internet Explorer icon and go directly to the Internet -- bypassing the Juno software. On the later versions (4.xx and higher), I can't. Now, my other system is on the XP platform, but I think the issue is with Juno....

I've seen lots of posts on various BBS,s where users have mentioned a "forced" upgrade. I'm still using 3.0 with no problems. If you can enlighten me on something I'm doing, let me know. I just don't want to have to go through the Juno screens each time I want to check a web page.

Thanks again for all your help!!

Bernie

I tried Juno ver 6, via a download. Did not like it at all. Lots of annoying new features. It did not have any dialup phone numbers for Hawaii. I use roadrunner cable, so that didn't bother me. Went back to version 5.
The one thing I Hate about juno. is that when you log on, it opens the last message you were reading.
If you download new mail, it automatically opens the first new message, and there are a lot of Spam Porn messages that open automatically. Juno could stop these, but even when they come from one of their servers, they claim it didn't. Blocking a senders address doesn't work very well, and using the mail assistants to block mail based on words in the subject are useless. More apt to block msg. you want, that doesn't meet the blocking criteria, than to block messages that do.

B) Hello FireFox31

I have long since lost 1.3x and have been looking for it. I agree that the upgrade was a mistake. Please consider uploading it to this archive so people can use it.

After 1.49 came out, I got so fed up with Juno, I quit it. I have tried it out from time to time with no more enjoyment, and the hassles of connection and making it work simply have not been worth keeping it on my system.
Thanks much.

By-the-way, I can't speak for Juno, but I am able to access Netzero email with any pop3/smtp program.....From any dial-up connection, and not Netzero. I manage to get both Pop3 and SMTP connections

I use the new version of Mailwasher which has pretty much effectively banished spammail and I heartily recommend it to any person.
It is a current freeware, and there is a plus version for sale as well. Both are fine.

If anyone does have older versions of Juno (1.x or anything earlier than 4.x really), please do upload them. (I have version, I think, 1.0 still, on a floppy somewhere. I would like to contribute that version.)

I just don't have any of the updated versions as a seperate install (except for some 4.x and 5.x version), because I let the auto-update take care of it.

I don't know what issues the original poster had with 5.x, I'm using it with no problems. I don't like the new 6.x NetZero-like client, it's not nearly as flexible as the old-style client.

Also, I noticed (or remembered) that the really old Juno client would let you manually change your dial-up phone number, the newer ones only let you pick from a list. Does anyone know about which version that changed? I think I went directly from 1.49 to some 4.x version that I re-downloaded, and I'm pretty sure 4.x (and now 5.x) lack that manual-phone-setting feature. Although, I just thought of a way to work-around it, maybe, by forcing the number to dial as a user-specified dialing-prefix, and then just letting it dial the listed pre-selected phone number afterwards, those digits should get ignored, hopefully. (Hopefully it won't call internationally!)

I've been using Juno and NetZero since they started (FreeI too, but NetZero bought them out), and they rock. They work really well with a v.92 modem too.

I'm running juno 7.0 speedband on a compaq presario with winme, pentIII, and 128mgs ram. I'm having some stability problems with this version and and was wondering if an older version will run along side the 7.0 version. Thinking of dropping back to version 4.0 without speedband if it will run better on my machine. I don't want to uninstall version 7.0 until I try version 4.0 and see how it works. Also I expect juno will constatantly request me to upgrade my software if I'm running an older version. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you install them in separate directories (folders), you may run several versions of Juno on the same computer.

As far as I know, Juno still supports versions 4 and 5.

I'm glad that oldversion has Juno 5.0 on here, the new version of Juno sucks. I do believe at least Juno 5.0 is supported, not sure about 4.0

Juno version 1.49 has not been able to work since December 31, 2004. An upgrade to version 1.51 has been sent to some users, which allows it to contiue working. I don't have that upgrade.

Last post is hard to believe. As of December 1, 2004 Juno discontinued ALL unpaid direct dial-up email connection. I was using both 1.49 and 4.0 on different accounts, and they were dead after that time for direct email connection. Email access worked only through internet connection after that date. :(

I never heard of a version 1.51 from Juno, so it should be considered with caution. :(

Version 1.49 allowed ONLY direct dial-up email. Version 4.0 and later allowed BOTH direct dial-up AND internet connection. Consequently, you can use 4.0 to go to Juno on the web to read your email there. That is a real internet connection, and you can go other places too. You can also read your other Juno email email accounts. It has a limited number of free hours. B)

An interesting problem with 1.49 email accounts is that it seems you can only change the password back at the Juno software on your PC. But 1.49 does not allow you to access the internet, so you can not change the password for that email account, which you can still access on the internet. :(

wow. I used Juno for so long :P probably since 94 Im guessing. But damn, they just aint worth it anymore. I mean, there is Gmail, 1000MB e-mail, last I checked, MSN/hotmail is giving 250MB mailboxes. And Im sure Yahoo is up there too.

Hell, even the game I play DefianceUO (http://www.defianceuo.com/) have started there own mail system, I believe with 1 GB/1000MB storage.

But yea, I sorta miss Juno in a way, but it's just too hard, only having 2MB inbox lol. I subscribe to a lot of mailing lists/yahoo groups/etc and it fills up FAST :P

I have the original Juno 3.0 (Build 13) installation CD. Unlike previous versions this one is NOT compatible with Windows 3.x. On the other hand it still has the built-in dialer plus an option to work with an existing TCP/IP connection.

This is the version I use. It works great on XP and should work well on older versions of Windows.

If I can find a way I can upload the installer for inclusion here. However, at around 5MB, over dialup it would take some time to upload. (I have time, though)

Juno has made many changes to the rules of the v5 Juno client.

All previous versions will be automatically upgraded to version v5. The client will recieve a huge packet in the second mail connection with an older version. It contains the archive for the updates.

It is no longer accepted for free email or free internet - Juno won't accept Juno Platinum dialer connections from v5 or below now, you will need to use v6 rebranded Netzero dialer system. You can still use the Juno email program with at least a MegaMail or Juno Platinum account.

The program remains the same. It's the servers that have changed.

However, gone are the advertisement banners - they never got any tangible money out of the ads due to the highly devalued price of online advertising. Ever since discontinuing the unpaid v5 marketing, there are no more advertisements. The packets that it receives are mostly the Juno Web components, as well as security.

I am guessing the Juno program will continue to be available until Juno chooses to stop support, or when Patent #5848397 expires, which will be on Dec 2018.

Well, it seems that Juno has abandoned the use of #5809242 and #5838790, offline advertising and advertisement security, so #5848397 is the one that deals with the remaining function of Juno 5.033, the method for receiving messages be it mail, upgrades, or advertising.

Patent 6014502 is the wrapping patent. It is challenged by http://www.JoeGalaxy.net , it does not use delivered advertising, only referred advertising, ducking this Juno patent. The program builds a cookie out of your demographic profile that it uses to obtain the advertising. It has a built-in webmail console, ducking another Juno patent. Joe Galaxy also offers chat, forums and its new P2P filesharing system in the program. Not a lot, but it's been going on as long as Juno, it is worth a look. :D

http://www.JoeGalaxy.net , download the client there, or take the red pill  to see the preview. Yeah, looks like they're Matrix fans.
