does it pop up on you? look for a setting to change in the program

if it is built into the program, no registry editing will remove that, if it was written into the code base then it requires editing the code.

else you can block the ip address of the ad server via the host file.
or deny access to the ad server via a firewall
or use another program like Trillian to solve the situation.

I already using trillian, but sometimes I use messenger too and that's wht I need the registry key. In registry is a key what says when it messenger the dialog box next time, but I don't know what I need to change in this key.

Find the patch called 'No more updates 41.6.exe' somewhere on the internet. That works.

However, it won't stop the security alert which is coming up since this week, which says you have to upgrade to ver 5 or more.

I've been getting a message popping up a few seconds after i log on to MSN Messenger 4.6. It says i must upgrade because of a security problem. So i downloaded 5.0, but it doesn't work properly on Windows 95. Is MSN planning to shut down all Messengers below 5.0? Am i and other Windows 95 users screwed over?

you might want to consider something like Trillian or Easy Message, http://www.easymessage.net/features.html, or Instant-T, http://www.interactiveni.com/IMSite/imfreeware.htm

Thanks for posting those links. However, neither will work on my computer. It's not a very good computer, but i can't afford a new one at the moment. I'll just use 4.6 and put up with the annoying messages until they do something like shut it down for good.

well. if you can determine which server MSN uses to send messages to your cleint, then you could block it via the Host file.
I do this with icq, since icq likes to send a web page when icq loads. so i found the icq ads server, and blocked it via the host file. so I never have to deal with the advertisements.
If you can determine the msn's update alert server. you could block it from annoying you, ofcourse this is not been tried by me, but i do not see why it could not work.
