I have not had an anti-virus program installed on my computers for years. Since running so many OS's, that don't suffer from the virus plagues as do the Microsoft products, but I do use the DOS versions of both, BitDefender & F-Prot, on a bootable CD-ROM for scanning user systems. They can also be used on a bootable floppy if needed.
The larger AVP just seem be suites these days, and are not really necessary. When you see the size of Nortons - 25meg programs or more, for scanning virii. When F-Prot is less the 2.5megs, and does the same thing.

I used Norton 2002 and PCCillin 2000 and both seemed good to me.

I currently use Norton 2002, Zone Alarm Pro 4.0 on Windows XP. I run AdAware once in a while too. Once you have the settings in place, they work great together...

If you want something that's freeware, relatively lightweight and for Windows and for home and small office use, then you can get Grisoft AVG Free Edition, which actually works fine, but has less options than what you have to pay for. Even virus definition updates are free (I don't know for how long, but I have had these programs installed for long enough). The major version offered is a figure lesser than what the site ( http://www.grisoft.com ) offers for pay.

W98 computer: I used to use CAI when it was free and it worked well and easy to use. Then bought Mcafee and it was OK too. It got old and now I use free Grisoft. Seems OK but I need to check for updates.

WXP computer: Norton came with this computer and the day after trial period expired, Blaster worm came out and I got it. (believe it or not- this is my first virus :( ) So got renewal of Norton for cheap -like 13.00 online. It is easy to check for updates and seems OK (although for the longest time it couldnt FIND blaster worm on the computer and it WAS here but isolated by Zonealarm) Finally found the damn thing ( it reappeared after first removal! yes I used MS patch) and got rid of it. Am using free Pro trial (very complicated) that expires tomorrow and then will go back to regular NAV. I am not a big fan of Norton as the N2002 Utilities disc REALLY SCREWED UP my W98 computer and was almost IMPOSSIBLE to uninstall.
The bottom line is price as they all seem to work after a fashion.
YMMV :)
THANKS LOCUSTFURNACE for posting all the AV sites. I was gonna suggest that you put them at the top with the other PINNED threads! :)

ed. to add that I NEVER use OE so feel a little secure on that front. Only NS4.0 Messenger!

Wait til ya read this little spot of info, its actually frightening if ya think how many times Windows crashes. and how many times have you upgraded to find out thing no longer work?
<!--QuoteBegin--http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=562&ncid=738&e=10&u=/ap/20031201/ap_on_hi_te/microsoft_cars@ yahoonews
We'd like to have one of our operating systems in every car on Earth, said Dick Brass, vice-president of Microsoft's automotive business unit. Cars with the Microsoft software will speak up when it's time for an oil change. They'll warn drivers about wrecks on the road ahead and scout alternative routes. They'll pay freeway tolls automatically. The software running their brakes will upgrade itself wirelessly.[/quote]

I would NOT want Windows controlling my brakes. I guess this would be a ploy to make ya pay for more stuff, since, MS Brakes 2.1BETA could stop ya sooner, if you paid for the MS Plus Pack. Have friends using your car? that will be an extra license fee, as Microsoft will ONLY stop the car with 1 person; the driver, inside it. and rem kids, its beta software, so there is no guarantee you car will even stop.
What happens if you sale you car? can you transfer the MS license over? If you buy a car without the software, will it still work? If battery goes dead, do the brakes also go with it?
when you flip the turn singals on, will you hear repeatedly "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO TURN LEFT?" If you drop a new engine into the vehicle, will you have to call for a new Software license, or will the system even work. LOL
Just imagine if you get a virus in that...

B.T.W. it was not a recomendation just information
though it has scored reasonably highly in tests I'd seen previously as did the old free innoculate anti-virus which I did use until they got swallowed up and I guess their old mission statement about saving the world by suppling free anti-virus software which should have been supplied by the companies that put out O.S's full of holes was kind of undigestible in their new corporate structure and maybe this trial is what finally passed out ! (my how the worm turns)
I think AVG users have been very lucky so far to keep it free.
You could try Avast on XP .I use it on 98 as an on demand scanner would like it as resident but had a few problems, its supposedly better on XP , also it will check to its server for updates if you like that sort of function.

Freeways dont tamper with my braking system. You really think they are like comparing apples to apples?
I dont mean controlling as in dictating software - cuz i would prefer an alternative. I mean i dont want software period, controlling my brakes, i am happy with hydraulic fluids and a brake pedal.

yes, using an anchor might be the way to get around the MS Braking System Beta2, Service Pack 3.00.4a if someone sends an email to my braking software with a virus payload.

Not the same but like death & taxes.
I'm actually looking foward to the day when I can sleep & my car will drive me to <s>the dark satanic mill</s> work in the morning.
I think as in toll roads you will be limited on where you can drive your human reaction time(challenged!)vehicle.
I am already required to trust in software if I fly ,train,... live next to a nuclear ... in the work enviroment alarms ,controlled valves ,machinery - The amount of ... that is added to the food I eat, medicines, water.
Also perhaps even beta brakes would be more predictable than some of the driving I have witnessed.
And if all else fails at least we wont have to search too hard for old versions as there are a couple attached to the ends of our legs.

BLUE If you don't like those kinds of thrills wait until the software is "out of" beta.

I dont object to software controlling things. I just object to Microsoft being THAT company that makes the software i use for my brakes.
There is alot of software companys that make very reliable software, IBM is still one of them. their OS/2 is used to control the ATM cash machines. (not sure if the eCommStations' version are used in ATM's.) I have a friend that makes custom ISA/PCI cards which end up in robotics that use OS/2 as well. I have never had problems running OS/2 Warp 4, which could run DOS apps, native OS/2 apps and many MS-Windows apps. Too bad MS & IBM split, maybe if they stuck together, Windows would have become a better OS.

MAJOR PROBLEM with Norton AGAIN on new computer :(
It doesnt seem to be working and I have error messages for email scanning and AutoProtect error. AND I CANT CHANGE THE SETTINGS. Cant use the defaults or change any setting. I have gone all over their website and there is nothing there but q and a and when I follow the steps IT DOESNT WORK. And IT WONT UNINSTALL!
That is my Big Gripe!
IT WONT UNINSTALL!
I hate this. Had this happen on W98 puter and had to reformat it to get rid of Norton.
Yes, I can call and PAY them to answer my questions but it will be a cold day in H#77 when I give them more money. I have done everything short of editing my registry and I wont do that with their instructions.
NORTON SUCKS! :(

Did you install and reboot which is usually the procedure for these monster apps. After you rebooted, where you able to uninstall it? if not, then you could disable the program from loading at boot time, which would disable the program, as it most likely will not uninstall while it is currently in use.
So you will want to disable it from loading via the START / RUN / msconfig /startup
then reboot the computer, and try to uninstall it.

Yes, this is why I pointed it out to you. Slow down and read the posts before you add to them. You don't need to add repeated info. This forum for the most part, deals with quality of postings, not the quantity of them.
Your posting so quickly and creating new postings that really are not necessary. If your wanting to be a valued member of this site, that takes time, not by dumping post after post on the board that is not really doing anyone any good. In 3 days you have posted 30+ posts, alot of members have not even posted that many in months.
And this post, and a couple more, goes to show, by your own words, your not trying to add helpful info, your just trying to get your post count high.

You should spend time reading through the MANY past postings before posting. There is a couple years worth of postings here. If you want to post something good, the only way is to read and read through previous postings. This is the way it is on ANY forum, when you become a member the first thing you want to do is read before participating.

If you read through many of the postings; a VERY GOOD IDEA, you will see very little chit chatting. If you want to chit chat with people, use a instant message service for this; they work extremely well in that area. if you want to help people by giving them accurate and useful answers, then do that. One line replies are not helping anyone with their problem or question, if someone does not have an answer, then they should not reply with wasteful filler.

Your first thought might be that I am making things difficult for you, and I am not. Keeping things on the forum clean, fast and to the point is alot of work. This site is not a chit-chat haven, it is want/give ask/receive pit-stop for most, very little filler info. This makes the forum extremely friendly to those who are looking for older apps; as they can get to the results quickly, without sorting through of a bunch of useless noise. And unlike many forums which are full of debating, which takes time and effort away from answering questions, this site gets and produces results without sidetracking users.

I was not aware Zonealarm is/was an anti-virus app, As far as i knew it has always been a firewall. Something change?
If your system froze, and you had to reinstall everything, you should have learned then that it is very important to keep a good up to date backup of your system. any apps can do the same thing you experienced.
Windows comes with a stock backup program that should be the minimum when it comes to backing up you data. and at the very least, backup your registry, it is extremely simple to do as well.

You can also use free anti-virus apps. Both of these subjects, firewalls and anti-viral apps can be found on the board. There many links for freebies also. and backing up has been touched upon in several areas, from backing-up whole systems to registry backups.

I use AVG by Grisoft. (Installed, but not running all the time.)
Once a week I also use an online (free) virus scanner like
BitDefender and sometimes RAV.

I've found this to work VERY well; for the last six
months I've been using this bunch of programs:
+ AVG
+ Zonealarm (without popup-/content filtering)
+ MyIE2 browser
+ CookieJar: http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/cookiejar.asp
+ Adaware (not running Ad-watch)
+ HTAstop: http://www.nsclean.com/freebies.html
+ SpywareBlaster:
http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html
+ DCOMbobulator: http://grc.com/freepopular.htm

But, of course, it depends very much on the settings used.

Take care all! :)

Don't be angry cause you can't read. Just start little, with; "See troll run, run troll, run!" There you go, thats a sentence! If you could read that, you should give yourself a gold star. Everyone at Oldversion is now proud of you.
But all honesty, if you can't read the posts, then you should go back to elementary school, since the language used in the post is not all that complex, or hire a tutor when your on the computer. Ofcourse with your garbage language used in your post, you probably have not even finished elementary school yet. Serial codes? No. that is illegal under the DMCA (http://www.gseis.ucla.edu/iclp/dmca1.htm). This site would be shut down quickly if it was hosting codes. The owner of the software title which serials were hosted for could file charges against the owners of OV for hosting such mechanism, which are illegal.

Ha ha. Grammer. Maybe locustfurnace will learn to spell? I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I learned to spell 'grammer' as 'grammar' when I was IN grammar school. I believe they also taught me that its YOU'RE not YOUR when you say something like "when your on the computer." Oh, and its brain wracked, like stressed; it is not racked, like hitting your genitals on something ("he racked his balls") or setting up a game of billiards ("he racked the balls").

I have used AVP, AKA Antiviral Toolkit Pro, now known as Kaspersky Antivirus or KAV, for many years now. I originally used a bootleg copy, but I liked it so much I bought it. You don't have to worry about it getting old. My version 3.0.129 can still update to the latest definitions. I think they use the same definitions for every OS, they also make a DOS version, which is nice for when windows is hosed and can't boot.
You can update here:
http://update2.avp.ch/updates
http://updates1.kaspersky-labs.com/updates
http://updates2.kaspersky-labs.com/updates
http://updates3.kaspersky-labs.com/updates
http://downloads1.kaspersky-labs.com/updates
ftp://updates3.kaspersky-labs.com/updates
you get the picture.

Their website is www.avp.ch

Well, I've used norton and McAfee Antivirus softwares, but finally came to rest with the Symantec Corporate Edition. It's just lovely. It's all i need and what's more the client version is just 18 MB approx.

I agree Symantec Corporate Edition, is much better than norton or mcafee. However I wonder, does anyone here know if Enterprise Edition is more advanced than Corporate.

I've found on several occasions on several machines with varying OSs, that when Norton gets installed and up and running properly, ( that sometimes is not easy ) it is fine.

Here are two links to antivirus products that are free for home use if anyone is interested. I've used AVAST and it seems to work fine. I believe that I also tried the other, but I'm not sure.

Additionally, I used to use F-Prot for windows which seemed a fine product. I however object to paying $30-$50 for the product, then the next year another $20-$30 for a years worth of updates. I feel "ripped off", whether it is true or not.

Currently I'm using Norton, but when my 3 month subscription runs out I'll likely go to a "free for home use product".

Antivir, not the Grisoft product is the other program I used. It's link is below. Of the two, ( Avast/Antivir ) I liked Antivir better. I seemed to have more control with it.

For the record, I received a 3 month free trial of Norton Antivirus 2004 edition. Instead of waiting until mid November when the subscription to Norton runs out, I decided to download and install Antivir on my windowsXP system.
It seems to be up and running fine.
By by subscription fees.

Hello first of alll I happen to use AVG Prov9.0
in beta testing at the moment
second of alll Mcafee died when they went to pay for to use after a 30 day trial I already pay for internet there are enough programs out there to not have to pay for anything.......
Norton all I can say is I am not interested in aprogrma that cant recognize half fo the current threats and asks you to scan your recycle bin before dumping it this is retarded and when I tested it last year and it asked me that its exactly what I put inthe beta testers report, you are already losign access to any viral data by dumping the bin why waste the time?
also Norton has screwed up enough programs onthe mahcines i have worked on to not trust it
I replac eit with AVG whenever possible

btw NASA uses AVG so if they can run mission critical on their machines its good enough for me
