I never used it, but since AIM is free, and DeadAIM, i'm guessing it is more of an enhancement to the AIM protocol and adds value. that would be left up to the creators, not the users of a product if it should be free or not.
As long as the protocol is freely available for programmers to build clients to take advantage of the code, and is free. i dont mind if one person opts to charge for a program. Sicne someone else who doesn't want to pay will build a free client.

Netscape used to charge for its web browser, Microsoft made theirs free. now. not only is Netscape free, but the source code is made available for programmers to create their own browsers now.

If you like deadAIM, and it uses the protocol specifications published, and you do not want to pay for deadaim, you have the options to make your own identical client, and make it free for others to use.

If you want deadaim to be free. contact the author, ask them if they can write a "lite" version, thats free, and make a pay version with more options.
The problem then becomes, sometimes those lite versions end up being supported with Ads to pay the bills. and then your stuck with ads.
