Hi welcome to the forums,AOL instant messenger if downloaded from here will be safe and definitely not contain a virus, all files are checked with many different scanners to check they are clean and good.A.O.L has long been noted for installing extras with its program. Google (aim spyware) and read a few of the results, many spyware programs pick this up such as Spybot and Adaware.

You may have checked for AOL to install "Internet Explorer Toolbar" or "Explorer Toolbar" during installation. It's important that you disable BOTH of these components during installation.

You might be able to go to Add/Delete programs and delete these add-ons.

Hope that helps. This file does not have a virus and is the original file that was released by AOL.
