The best version of Winamp is 2.81 (RIGHT BEFORE AOL BOUGT THE COMPANY AND DESTROYED THE PRODUCT!)

Like Realplayer,it was good UNTIL 8.0,after that AOL had bought "Realnetworks" and totally trashed Realplayer (Banners, ads, etc)

Huh if you say so :hmm: ... the versions 5 still seem good to me, even though I don't use all the features and don't do the default install.

Version 2.x was good until XP SP2/WMP 9 & 10 was released. Could not get the EQ to work on the old WinAmp when playing CD's even with plugins available for that version. Went to version 5 with Classic look and all is well again. IMO, version 5 is not all that bad, and as far as I can remember, you can still customize the install to get the 'Lite' version.

 Just to notify people : today I tried to install the latest "5.5 10th year anniversary edition" of WinAmp under Windows 98 : it installed, but even after reboot, I could not run it : always had the same error message about Shell32.dll and a missing export or something (please forget my approximative translation from french).

So as far as I know, the last version of WinAmp to really work under Windows 98 is version 3.35.
Was not really easy to find that one since :
- it's not on OldVersion (yet)
- most general download sites link to the latest official version
- even if they don't, when they linked to the direct link on official website, it's just dead (I guess the guys from AOL don't like to keep older versions :/ )

Finally could find it on that page : http://www.hit.ro/downloads/files/Winamp-5.35-Full.html

The site seems to be in Italian or something, but it's still easy to use even if you don't speak it — I don't...
