well for the windows version of CompuPic costs, but i always used the UNIX version which was free.
not wanting to generate thumbnails, as to have a thumbnailed preview index. without opening each image to see what each image is.
I bought the Firehand Ember years ago. since it was the only one i tried that i liked alot, and i had been doing alot of image editing for designs.
I use Pixie under UNIX now to have an photo view.

I know this is off-topic a bit, but do you know of a free service on the net that would allow me to convert a bmp image to gif or jpg? I&#39;ve found a few but they alter the colors a bit, doesn&#39;t look right. You guys are the gurus i&#39;ve been looking for&#33;

you just need a program to convert. the favorite one i use, which is not free, is called LviewPro, but there are other good ones that are free, i have posted links for them here many times.
you dont want to compress much, at the most, also, in LviewPro, i use the default which aroud 75%. your quality and what you want will depend on whats the most important for you, If you want the best quality from bmp, you will want to use PNG format instead of jpeg.
you can also do lossless jpeg compression, which is good for things such as rotating the image and saving it, without re-compressing the image, which would degrade the qaulity more.
but if space is not an issue so much, you might want to use the png, as PNG was invented to repalce the gif algorithm, which is proprietry and licensed and costly. but the patent i believe has recently expired in the USA, but not in all countries.
Jpeg is good enough for most photos. with the advancement of jpeg2000 though, there might be much higher quality, though not many apps- if any, support this format, other than just the lossless format.
