I currently have Windows Media Player v6.01. Should I download and upgrade it to 6.4? Are there any new file formats supported? Is it improved any other way?

BtW, no I will not upgrade to WMP 7, 8 or DRM-infested 9.

you just need the codecs to play newer encoded formats. I do have Mplayer v 6.4 installed and when it encounters a format unknown, it will try to download a new codec for it, and i have not had to upgrade beyond that. but you might want the 6.4.
just try to play something encoded in WMA/V 8 or 9, and see if it will retrieve the codecs.

Unfortunately, I cannot play Quicktime or Realmedia files. I can play any other file, including WMA, AVI, MPEG, etc. but no quicktime/realmedia for me. Unless there is a codec for those two, I will have no choice but to install Quicktime/Realmedia alternitive.

search the forum, there is a link for RA codecs that work in winamp, not sure on the QT though, i dont use any of these formats for anything, so never pay much mind to them.

I wish I didn't have to use these formats of video, I REALLY do, but I have no choice. I am FORCED to use these formats if I wish to view the video.

windows media player 6.4 is gd, but try media player classic which mosky mentioned. it's an improved version of wmp 6.4 and is often being improved and fixed of its bugs without being bloated. go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ and find MPC.

quicktime alternative is made to work with this player. for real alternative u still have to install the player and backup the registry, then uninstall the player again and restore the drivers for real formats. go search and read up by the makers alright! =D
