Have you tried looking at the left side column after going to Windows Update? There should be an option there to customize your settings. Go there and click on "Add Windows Catalog" (something close to that.) After you go back up that page and click at the top to submit the change, then you can get into to the Catalog from that left hand side again in the main Windows Update page. Pick your operating system from the drop down menu and it will bring up all the critical updates, patches, recommended updates, driver updates, etc for you to download to your computer to install (and copy to cd) later.

While you're changing your settings you can also untick all the language updates (and some other things) if you don't need them and then they'll never show up again when you scan for new updates.

Note; If you delete your cookies, you will have to go through these steps again.
Which really shoud not be an issue as updating the system is not an everyday process.

get hold of a program called partition magic any version will do

this splits your hardrive into 2 or more sections when u reformat ure pc it only formats the partition u specify so as when u reload windows 98 if u saved the patches on the seccond partition they will still be there so its just a case of reinstallin them,

    or

on a fresh reformat after installation of all drivers and patches get a copy of norton ghost and ghost ure hardrive, that way when ure pc goes tits up u only have to restore it from the ghost image,,,,,, saves a reformat and ages gettin patches and loadin drivers

PM has been requested, and its listed somewhere in the forum. The subject has be discussed in the past, so there are several alternatives to PM. Many are free, Partition magic is not free.

Nortons Ghost is not free, but there are many free alternatives in the forum already.
    Just search the forum.
