    Hi

I have a couple movies that I would like to burn onto a CD but are too large...so I am wondering what my options are.

    1) A program that compress large movie files (other than zip). 2) A program that splits them in half.

Are these my only options and what is the best route.

    Thanks in advance.

You could compress them with WinRAR. and then split the RAR's into 700 meg segments.
You could just split the movies as-is into 700meg segs.
Depending on your processor speed, you could compress them into the Divx format, or MPEG4, or Quicktime MOV.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

The files are already in divx format i believe. Any way to compress them further?
Also, I believe that winrar isnt free...any free options?

    Thanks in advance

I would not compress them again, if they are already in Divx, which is most likely a second generation conversion, as the originals were most likley in some mpeg format.
WinRAR may not be free, but I would imagine you can get a 30day trial.
there are many formats for compression; such as bz2, tar,gz,zip, ace, 7z...
    • 7-Zip (FREEWARE)
File Compression utility, Supported formats: 7z, ZIP, CAB, RAR, ARJ, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, RPM and DEB
    • HJsplit (FREEWARE)
      File Splitting utility
    • AVI Splitter (SHAREWARE)
Avi Splitter allows you to split a large AVI file into smaller AVI files, or to extract manually selected segments of an AVI file to new AVI files.

Here is an older post which has various free video players you might also be interested in.

HJsplit (old versions smaller) is small, widely used and distributed so if you share your split files chances are the recipient will already have the software to join them for free :)

well there are several things you can do.
you can overburn the divx using nero *the program *

you can split the divx in half by downloading virtual dub.

your best bet would to overburn the file.

Not all burners support overburning, and overburning can damage your hardware.
