Have you tried to start the program up when your disconected from the internet? It might be waiting for a reply from a dead server??

If the program can't connect to the internet, should it just show a blank page, and then you can use the player?(crosses fingers)

Didn't work that way. By the way that regkey file that everyone keeps linking to does not seem to be there.

Can't someone just post up what we are supposed to TYPE in the registry? and we can do the rest ourselves? or just upload the registry file so we can use it???

you could visit p2pzone.com which is a p2p dedicated site and far more capable of answering your questions,as their members are all filesharers and ov members for the most part do not use these apps

Or you could just use this and create the required keys........

Napster (not the new Napster) required a username and password to log onto the servers. Since they are no longer in business, one can not use an old client any longer without a username and password to access the 'server'. Also, those servers are no longer around.
I believe this program generates a valid login/password so the client can be used on the OpenNap servers.
It is basically assigning a username with the client.
The program creates a registry key so that the client can now be used, this would be the same as if the now defunct Napster issued you a server login name via a sign-up script.

It allows old clients to connect to todays OpenNAP servers. As for being a crack, there is nothing being cracked. The information on the website key generator is created from using the Napster protocol specifications, http://opennap.sourceforge.net/napster.txt

As for how the majority of the information was obtained, either by decompiling or reverse engineering or packet sniffing... That then could very well make the use of the program illegal.
Most of the underlaying Napster code uses protocols that are established under the Requests for Comments (RFCs) and some user interface coding is pieced ontop. The entire program can easily be independantly created by different programmers. Without any infringement or copyright violations.
In the same regards, the steps involved in creating this file, is the same steps used in creating alternative chat clients, other than those by the creators.

This does not mean, just because they are using open standards that it is not illegal to copy the code. But one must consider if the code used is something created by the programer or something they used thats in plain sight to anyone.

[Iin Microsoft Windows, the ftp.exe program was not written by MS, but it is from BSD. Even the copyright still exists in the program which clearly states '@(#) Copyright © 1983 The Regents of the University of California.' Microsofts uses code from BSD since the code is freely available. Even though the program is copyrighted by 'The Regents of California, MS is not violating any copyrights by using the code in Windows]

Since the program is not changing the status of the program, such as changing a shareware to a full version, or bypassing any encryption. It is just creating a login name so the client has a identity on a server, which was freely available when the company was in business, I'm hesitant to remove this link unless there is a valid reason to do so.

If you or anyone has a valid reason for why it should be removed. Then please add it to the thread. I may still remove after some consideration.

I certainly do not have any personal objections to leaving this link in place. I was merely drawing attention to the boards policy on cracks and keygens.
Others may see it as a precedent or the thin end of the wedge.

Yes, cracks and 'keygens' are illegal, those which change the status of an app from being a trial-ware to full version, or which bypass encryption protection schemes.
Not all keygens are illegal either. I use many random key generators under *nix. For hashing, password creation, random entropy, SSL key creations, SSH key-gens, public/private key generators, etc etc.
Since the registry generator - which is what it should be called, in the above link does not break any encryption or change the app from a trial to full version I do not see any issues with the leaving the link in place. But if there is a good enough legal reason it should be removed, it will be removed.

Does anyone know how to get the old napster Mp3 payer to work.

When i install it , it wants to connect to the old napster servers for it to work, as you know they are no longer so it never finishes the installation process . I just want it for the old Mp3 player I know the program is not good for anything else.
