I'm using Win98se on a 4yo P3 where Windows has not been updated for over 12m. When I ran the MS windows scan facility it flagged-up 9 "critical updates." But on attempting `review & install' for the 9 the m/c froze, such that I had to power-off. With power back on, the updates were indicated to be in a temp file (content.IE5) when I'm using IE6. Is this part of the problem? I'm using IE6 - & there still seems to be IE5 files on the system. Some of these IE5 files relate back to when the m/c was purchased in Sep99. (Can these be safely deleted?) I tried installing the oldest update separately - but got the same result.

What else can I add? B/band user via AOL7. ZoneAlarm. Grisoft AVG.

    If it is significant, the updates are: 813951(IE6sp1), 814078(MS Jscript), 816093(MS VM), 819696, 823559, 837009(OE6sp1), 840315, 867801(IE6sp1), 870669(ADODB.stream).

Please explain as if explaining to your Granny!

If you think those ie5 files are causing a problem, you do not have to delete em, just rename them from something such as ie5.exe to ie5.OLD. If you encounter any problems, you can simply change the OLD back to exe.
Try disabling the Anti-Virus and the firewall while performing the updates.
