is that the system requirements or recommended settings?
instead of using ACDSee, why not try a freeware alternatives.

XnView, freeware, support of more than 400 graphics formats.

Irfanview, freeware, about 100 support formats, including several multimedia formats

don't know what speed your PII is or how much memory but acdsee 6 works fine for me - using PII 350 and 640Mb ram.

    ACDSee™ 6.0 - Requirements
    Microsoft® Windows® 98, ME, 2000, or XP
Intel Pentium-class processor or equivalent (PIII 500 or above recommended)
64 MB RAM (128 MB recommended)
High Color (16 bit) or higher display adapter
    60 MB free disk space
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later

it will work on a pentium, so it should work fine with your PIII.
they recommended, there is a difference between what it works on and what they recommended.
it just means your will have a more smoother session while using their app, but does not mean it will not work if your system doesnt meet the recommended requirements

that would depend on the OS your running and how well it manages resources. Win2k/XP should manage resource much better than 95/98 did in the past.
all programs eat resources. and Windows should manage them better than it does, you only have 65,536 different resource identifiers, regardless of how much RAM is installed.

If your not doing multiple tasks, and just running the ACDsee editor, then worrying about resource management should not be an issue. once the program exits. your resources should return.

Might want to exit some apps, such as virus scanners and firewalls and IMs, and any unneeded startup / systray apps, such as the quick launchers for printers, RealPlayer, Quicktime, if your having resource issues. If the app loads when Windows loads, it will reduce your resources, so dont load apps you dont use.
Reduce the number of fonts you have installed, since 64 fonts requires 1% GDI resources, the icons on your desktop, the super intense wallpaper will also help reduce the amount of spent resources, dont use Active Desktop, its a hog as well.

Why not use a FREE graphics viewer with more file formats then Acdsee handles?
