OK, I just want to make sure that I'm right.

I'm using Windows 98, so I would download DivX 5.2, correct? Or is that "Win 98" actually referring to Windows 98 Second Edition, which is different from Windows 98 (the one I'm using)? People usually don't know that there are some differences between the two, for example, there was this one program I couldn't download because I didn't have SE.

So the newest version of DivX for Windows 98, not the Second Edition, would be:
1) DivX 5.2
2) DivX 5.1.1

Which one would it be, 1 or 2? And thank you very much!

you should be fine with either of the versions you have stated i dont use win 98 anymore so cannot try it but im sure there wasnt a version that run on 98se and not 98 first edition.

If this does not work for you, i would suggest giving the XVID codec a try.
