    Default Finding Old Versions

I have found one of the best sources for old versions is thrift shops. Particularly after Microsoft has changed OS's. I have 3 versions of Office, 2 of Flight Sim., Golf, Versions of Money from 16 bit to XP. Just be sure you get the serial number with them.

Thrift shops are resale of used merchandise, usually for charity. It is perfectly legal, and usually helps a good cause. Make sure the media in the package is the legal, original copy. And sometimes it doesn't hurt to check a crack site to be sure your serial number is original. Some software has an ID number in the software that will identify if the serial number belongs to that particular copy. But since I have found several copies of software valued in the $100's of dollars for $1-4 dollars, it can be worth the trouble.
I have never run into a bad copy or serial number, but still is good advice to check.

You can't be sure of anything like that.
Your serial not being published on the net doesn't prove that noone else uses it ...

with regards to checking out a crack site (BAD ADVICE) why compromise your pc by visiting such places, this is where the naive people go wrong, crack sites are illegal and its real bad advice pointing people towards such sites as well as the fact that this kind of thing is frowned upon at oldversion.

Apologies about the crack site "crack". My thinking was that cracking the software is the ethical issue, but I didn't mean to support any sort of underhanded behavior.
The issue I meant to bring up is that some software can validate the serial number. I think this has something to do with the problems some people have with the functionality of the software. I have known this to be the case in my personal experience. I can think of no other way to validate, more or less, the uniqueness of the serial number in troubleshooting.

Constance, the approach to troubleshooting is narrowing the possibilities. The process can be very complicated. If there were any sure things, we wouldn't need forums, now would we?

There are sure things, I don't see the point with having forums or not for whatever else is not sure / obvious etc..
