Activesync malfunction

I have an old Ipaq (model 3630) and have been using Activesync 3.8.0. Recently it would no longer connect (USB device not recognized). THis happened once before and I believe I downloaded the same version and it worked. This time, I tried version 3.8 download both from microsoft and oldversions.com. Still no detection of the device. I tried the newest version (4.5), but was not surprised that it did not work either. Any advice will be welcomed. I would hate to have to buy a new device (I primarily use it just as an address book), but perhaps that is the only solution. Thanks, BayouUnc
