    At very old PC's I prefer Windows NT 4, because NT (XP, Vista, Windows 7 are NT family too) is more secure than 9x (Win 98 and Win Me).
    You could run programs with restricted rights ("runas" with any non-admin account) and make access control lists to files at NT systems, so even if you will run bad software, it will not hurt you much.

    you could download a registry cleaner or registry optimizer like Ccleaner, Ashampoo, and so on

    I had the same problem, up to now I still don't know If I'm goinf to consult an online computer support. Im afraid it will costs high. That's why I'm looking for forums like this one.
