MSN Messenger - Help?

Hi all.
The computer I am on had MSN 4.7 on it, and I wanted to upgrade to one with more features.
I went to the MSN site first, but 8.5, the newest release is a huge install with tons of useless features.
I came to oldversion and downloaded 6.x and when I tried to sign in, it FORCED me to download and update to 8.5 (or it wouldn't let me even sign in)

Can anyone tell me how to get around having to install 8.5?
Is there another version of the MSN messenger on this site that WONT make me install 8.5?
