Startman

[Startman]

I like the program "startman" that was done by pcforrest
but cannot find it anywhere anymore. I would love to get
the last version of it.

you can also use the windows "msconfig utility, as well as C:\windows\start menu. and even for the really brave, the regedit to edit your startup apps

For "really brave" if you delete something from the System Registry accidentally, it may be corrupted to the extent that Windows may not re-start at all so beware. (plenty of information on this forum re: backing up your data etc)

The link in the quote does not want to work for me.
Tar.gz is used mostly for UNIX apps. it is a 2 step process, first you tar (tape archiver) the files, which sticks a bunch of loose files into a archive, then you compress .gz (gzip/gunzip) the tar file. There are also bzip/bunzip (.bz2) types compression for tar files, which would give you file.tar.bz2, and they can also be named in other formats such as tgz for tar.gz and .tbz for tar.bz2.

tar.bz2 will give much greater compression than zipping a file. Not sure if winzip will handle these sort of files, have not used winzip in ages, i just use the 7zip shell extension in Windows, and the tar and gzip & bzip2 under other OS&#39;s.

What are you having trouble with the download or accessing the review page.I tried various,browsers,download manager,:o unproxied, :ph34r:anon&#39;proxied,no problem.

I did slow down tonight, and now i am playing super catch-up.
I don&#39;t use winzip as it is not freeware. last time i used winzip was... many many years ago is all i can rem.

I dont know about versions from waybackwhen but someone stuck an evaluation version on this comp&#39; when I wasnt looking ggrrrrr.
It is rather bloated,too intrusive and creates too many mostrecentuser lists for my taste only thing I liked was the unzipping into a folder it creates.Free so far but if it stops working and is removed I&#39;ll be happier.

PowerArchiver is a better zip utility than winzip, if your going to use an evaulation copy or shareware versions of these utilities.
I like the archive converter of PowerArchiver, this way i can take the hundreds of zip, RAR files i download, and convert them to a better format - tar.bz2, in one or two clicks all at one time.
Better off using 7zip, as it is FREE, and can also handle some rar files. and can achieve better zip compression ratio than winzip.

7zip will also extract to a folder, plus offers the right menu click option, so you can right click on a file and extract contents much faster than waiting for a GUI to load, ask if you want to continue the trial, and wait 10 seconds or so, then finally get around to using the utility.
