Considering that WinAVI is shareware, you should take a look at
Xmpeg
XMPEG is a open source converter built on MPEG1/MPEG2/AC3 high quality decoders. It exports video and audio frames through an Adobe Premiere compatible interface.
The basic video editing funtionalities use the best algorythms to preserve the maximum quality (HQ Bicubic 0, 0.75). In addition, it supports with AVIWriter the latest encoding format (H264 and AAC, DivX6.4).
The plugins furnished in this package allow you to create your own DivX, MPEG4 part 10 (H264)/part 2, DVD, SVCD with the optimum output quality. XMPEG is a reference in offline encoding tool world.
The lastest developments will allow PSP H264 AVC files and lastest streaming formats.
A wizard is available to help beginners in a simple way how to do backups in a couple of clicks.
I've used it to convert VOB to XviD and it worked well. Plus it is freeware. If you add the XviD-SMP build on a dual-core system it should speed up your time converting.
i use it always it's the best
it can merg the translation with movies
