The HOSTS file is stored differently on the different versions of MS Windows. The location given above is likely for Windows NT/2000/XP, while Windows 9x stores the HOST file under
C:\WINDOWS\
I think you need to make your hidden files visible:
1. Go to My Computer
2. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
3. Click the View tab
4. Checkmark the "Display the contents of system folders"
5. Under the Hidden files and folders select "Show hidden files and folders"
6. Click Apply and then OK
Now the hosts file should be visible.

Under C:/Windows I have,
hosts, hosts.20040114-115220.backup, and HOSTS.SAM
The first one has something to do with spybot.
Ok. Please open the first one (hosts) with a text editor and then tell me if the content looks similar to this:
Code:# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host 127.0.0.1 localhost
No, it just has this at the very bottom,
# Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy
# End of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy
The text you posted is in HOSTS.SAM

Ok. Now delete your content of "hosts" and then copy and paste the following three lines:
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 e526.d.akamaiedge.net
127.0.0.1 fpdownload.macromedia.com
Save the file to its original location and without extension.

Thanks, I tried there first. This is different. This is something that's embedded in the flash file on these sites. It doesn't happen with all sites. Thank you to all who tried to help me. It's been really great of you.
